Join Nu Quantum - Shaping the Future of Technology

Nu Quantum is at the forefront of quantum computing and advanced technology, driven by innovation, diversity, and a commitment to excellence. We’re creating an environment where brilliant minds from all backgrounds collaborate to push the boundaries of what’s possible.

Founded to commercialise research generated over the last decade at the Cavendish Laboratory, Nu Quantum is on a mission to shape the future of quantum information systems.

We’re working on exciting technology that will improve the utility and accelerate the time-to-market of quantum computing systems. We integrate novel quantum photonic technology to form an efficient and scalable quantum networking infrastructure in partnership with world-leading companies and academic groups.

Nu Quantum is looking for a Nanofabrication Engineer to join our growing team, tackling exciting problems to make scalable quantum computing a reality.

The Role

We are looking for a Nanofabrication Engineer to accelerate the development of our quantum networking technology. These form a core part of our hardware R&D efforts, and their performance is crucial to reaching the rate and fidelity required for multi-core quantum computing. You would join our highly motivated and multi-disciplinary hardware team, with expertise in optics, integrated photonics, microwave engineering and nanofabrication. Your role would initially focus on developing and optimising nanofabrication processes involved in the nanofabrication of Optical Cavities.

Responsibilities:

  • Fabrication, metrology and handling of ultrasmooth optical microcavity devices in line with specifications required for Nu Quantum’s next generation Qubit Photon Interface.
  • Optimisation and automation of Nu Quantum’s bespoke cavity fabrication technology towards pilot production.
  • Schedule and coordinate fabrication work with other process engineers to meet project deliverable timeline and quality standards.
  • Operate FIB/SEM systems to carry out nanofabrication tasks such as milling, structuring, patterning, deposition and failure analysis.
  • Carry out high precision metrology measurement, analyse data and produce detailed reports.
  • Preparation and handling of microcavity devices for low-loss optical coatings by use of wet and dry etching in a shared cleanroom environment.

Requirements

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • Undergraduate or postgraduate degree in materials science, physics, electronic engineering or a related discipline.
  • Extensive experience and deep understanding of FIB milling for device processing.
  • Experience with image analysis and machine learning for FIB/SEM automation is highly desirable.
  • Hands-on experience with cleanroom processing, including wet and dry etching and sample handling. Able to work in a shared cleanroom environment.
  • Experience with high precision metrology techniques like AFM, white light interferometer, stylus profilometer, etc.
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem solving, and communication skills (verbal and written) for successful multi-disciplinary group interactions.
  • The ability to adapt and work both autonomously and as part of a small team.

Experience with some of the following is not necessary but a bonus:

  • Previous experience with fabrication or optical characterisation of optical microcavities.
  • Knowledge of quantum optics or cavity quantum electrodynamics.
  • Process experience in wafer dicing.
  • Ability to use R/Python/JMP to carry out large-data set analysis.
