Job Summary

The Staff Registered Nurse (RN) in the Family Birth Center is a licensed professional accountable for direct and indirect age-appropriate patient assessment, care planning, and patient care. The RN collaborates with care providers and the patient’s family in developing a care plan and ensures that care is delivered safely and effectively. This role includes reporting patient status to the physician, obtaining care orders, and providing patient/family education.

The RN is responsible for mentoring students, new nurses, and peers while promoting educational opportunities for self and others. Safe and competent nursing care is expected, in alignment with the standards of Gritman Medical Center, the Idaho State Board of Nursing, and the American Nurses' Association.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments and develop care plans.
  • Monitor patient progress and update care plans accordingly.
  • Communicate patient status and changes to physicians and care team.
  • Educate patients and families about health conditions, treatments, and post-care.
  • Serve as a mentor for students and new nurses.
  • Adhere to regulatory standards and hospital policies.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and act as a role model within the department.

Job Requirements

Required Education:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Eligible for Idaho State Nursing Board examination or licensure by reciprocity.
  • Completion of Gritman Medical Center's core nursing competency assessment within 90 days of hire.
  • Completion of 10 job-appropriate CEUs per year.

Required Licenses and/or Certifications:

  • Current Idaho Registered Nurse license.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications (required upon hire, maintained every 2 years).
  • Fetal Heart Monitoring certification within one year of hire.
  • Annual attendance at one skills fair.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of current nursing practices based on evidence-based research.
  • Strong ability to assess patient conditions and implement effective care strategies.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Capacity to work under pressure and adapt to changing circumstances.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a family birth center or labor and delivery unit.

Functional Demands

Population(s) Served:

  • Neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • All sociopolitical, demographic, and physical ability groups.

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent standing, walking, and bending.
  • Lifting up to 40 lbs., occasional patient transfers.
  • Fine motor skills for patient handling and computer use.
  • Exposure to various physical and emotional demands, including unpredictable situations.

Environmental Conditions

  • Regular exposure to infectious diseases and bloodborne pathogens.
  • Contact with patients in a variety of health circumstances, including emergency and crisis situations.
  • Exposure to environmental hazards in patient homes when conducting home visits.
  • Irregular hours and shifts may be required.
