PRN CMA in our Surgery Department ONE day per week (WEDNESDAY), must be flexible and willing to float to different areas when needed.
Will cross train in same-day surgery, central sterile, surgery and specialty clinics.
JOB TITLE: Certified Medical Assistant/ Licensed Practical Nurse
PRIMARY FUNCTION & RELATIONSHIP TO TOTAL ORGANIZATION:
Provides quality care on a direct and indirect basis. Communicates with and on behalf of the patients and coordinates patient care with other health care team members. Organizes those aspects of patient care for which she/he is accountable. Will cross train in all areas of the department, including but not limited to: Same Day Surgery, Endoscopy, Central Sterile, Surgery Rooms, and Pain Clinic.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Obtains initial patient information and provides pre-op and post-op care of short stay patients.
- Document’s interventions, patient response, effectiveness, and complications on the patient EMR.
- Conducts pre-op and post-op calls regarding patient’s health and procedures in the appropriate timeframe.
- Answers phone calls in a courteous and professional manner.
- Maintains knowledge and administration practices of medications given in the surgical/pain department. Prepares and administers medications under the direction of immediate registered nurse or provider.
- Provides education to patients and families using the teach-back method per protocols and guidelines.
- Efficiently communicates information to registered nurse, providers, or co-workers as deemed necessary.
- Prioritizes, plans, and organizes the delivery of care to use time and resources effectively and efficiently.
- Maintains accountability for own care to assure adherence to ethical and legal standards.
- Performs pre- and post-op cleaning in bays when needed and prepping rooms for clinical procedures.
- Assists in transfer, positioning, and preparation of the surgical patient. Helps within the OR under direct supervision as needed.
- Assists with maintaining department PAR levels for food, equipment, linen, and supplies.
- Complies with hospital, OR, and nursing service policies. Will complete annual competencies, attend department meetings, and read emails regularly.
- Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs.
- Central Sterile – provides the most effective method of cleaning, packaging, sterilizing, and disinfecting of instruments and equipment to maintain asepsis.
- Endoscopy – assists with cleaning and processing of scopes, room turnover, circulates, and assists provider as needed.
- Demonstrates the knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.
- Demonstrates willingness to support staffing and scheduling needs.
- Demonstrate initiative to improve quality and customer service by striving to exceed customer expectations.
- Balance team and individual responsibilities; be open and objective to other’s views; give and welcome feedback; contribute to positive team goals; and put the success of the team above own interest.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Requires constant mental alertness and the ability to evaluate, detect, and act on changes to the patient’s condition. Maintains a high degree of efficiency in the ability to change from task to task and establishing appropriate priorities.
Requires full range of body motion, including patient assist, manual and finger dexterity, and eye hand coordination. Occasionally requires long periods of standing, walking, and lifting heavy items.
Must be able to work in a high stress environment, and able to work closely and effectively with occasional demanding providers/surgeons.
Works in environmentally controlled atmosphere. Exposure to harmful chemicals and radiation. Chance of injury caused by needles and sharp instruments, autoclave burns, electrical equipment, power tools, and body fluids are all risks of working in this department.
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- CMA: o Graduate from an accredited program for Medical Assistants. o Current, unrestricted certification for Certified Medical Assistant.
- Completion of BLS.
- LPN
- Graduate from accredited program for Licensed Practical Nurses. o Current, unrestricted license to practice in the State of Iowa. o Completion of BLS. ACLS and PALS certification within 6 months of hire.
