Labor Crew Leader – City of Sioux City
The City of Sioux City is seeking a dedicated and capable Labor Crew Leader to join our team. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a hands-on leadership position and values teamwork, accountability, and service to the community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assign, oversee, and actively participate in the daily tasks of a labor crew
- Maintain accurate records of crew hours, materials used, and work completed
- Demonstrate basic leadership and communication skills to ensure efficient operations
- Perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions
Requirements:
- Must be in good physical condition to meet the demands of the role
- Possess or obtain a Class A CDL with tanker endorsement within six months of hire
- Availability for first shift: Monday–Friday, 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM
- Willingness to work overtime during snow and ice control operations

Residency Requirement:
Employees must reside within 30 miles of Sioux City limits, including eligible areas in Nebraska and South Dakota.

Position Duties
- Assigns, oversees and participates in the work of a small crew involved in construction and/or maintenance of City properties including parks, streets, right-of-ways, etc.
- Leads crew(s) involved in concrete or asphalt work, mowing, trimming and snow removal operations, sewer, storm drain, culvert cleaning, street/storm clean up, and erosion control operations.
- Initiates and processes requisitions for required equipment, materials and personnel.
- Prepares and maintains accurate records of materials used and work completed.
- Instructs and trains employees in proper and safe procedures and practices.
- Operates equipment and assists crew with physical work as needed.
- Insures proper cleaning and preventative maintenance schedules on vehicles and equipment.
- Participates in all snow and ice control duties as assigned.
- Attends regular meetings to receive directions and discuss plans with supervisory personnel.
- Maintains regular and punctual attendance at work.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with officials, other agencies, fellow employees, and the general public.
- Regularly lifts and/or up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds.
- Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency. In the event that an employee is excused from work other than being sick, they will be required to report to work in a state of declared emergency.
Minimum Qualifications
Job Knowledge: Complete working knowledge of the practices and principals of basic construction and maintenance work regarding typical municipal operations, and of operating, maintaining and servicing trucks and light equipment, and of laws and regulations governing the operation of trucks and equipment including accepted safety policies and practices, hazards and precautions. Ability and skill in the safe operation of various equipment used in the construction and maintenance of City properties and right of ways.
Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication: Requires effective communication skills and the ability to provide effective and courteous assistance to customers (external and internal). Requires the ability to speak and write effectively in English with fellow employees; read in English; apply common sense understanding to the work process, procedures, programs and services; ability to prepare and maintain routine records, and to provide and follow verbal and written instructions.
Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle and feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions with 100% of the work being performed in the field. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold and extreme heat; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
