About the Department
The Role:
The Payroll Technician supports business operations by processing payroll accurately and on time, resolving payroll issues, and coordinating with the Payroll and People & Culture departments. The payroll technician also assists with accounts payable and maintains compliance with all regulations while safeguarding company assets.
Position Duties
What You’ll Accomplish:
Keep in mind that this list is not all inclusive.
- Review timecards, pay amounts, and special payments for accuracy using established policies and laws.
- Investigate and document payroll discrepancies
- Monitor payroll deductions and adjustments, including garnishments, union dues, deferred compensation, and voluntary insurance costs.
- Respond to payroll and timekeeping inquiries; provide training as needed.
- Create and post journal entries for various accounting functions, including payroll.
- Process accounts payable, payment requests, and expense reports.
- Prepare and submit government reporting, including taxes and retirement payments; ensure compliance with changes.
- Generate routine and ad hoc reports for management.
- Document payroll procedures and system changes. Maintain compliance with all contracts and policies.
- Pursue ongoing training for payroll system/process improvement. Research industry best practices.
- Handle sensitive information confidentially and professionally.
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
What We’re Looking For:
- Associate’s degree or equivalent, or three years of progressive payroll experience, including two years’ experience with complex payroll systems.
- At least one year of accounts payable experience or equivalent education and experience.
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of computerized time/attendance and payroll systems; proficient in Microsoft Office.
- Strong mathematical skills (discounts, interest, commissions, etc.) and analytical abilities.
- Effective communicator across diverse groups; able to interpret written, oral, and diagram instructions.
