Overview

The Senior Vice President (SVP) of Purchasing – Pharmacy is a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for setting and executing the enterprise-wide vision, strategy, and governance of pharmaceutical procurement across PharMerica and Amerita. This role drives transformational initiatives to optimize the total cost of ownership, ensure uninterrupted product availability, and enhance supplier performance across a national footprint. The SVP leads cross-functional collaboration with clinical, operational, financial, and legal leaders to align purchasing strategies with business objectives, regulatory compliance, and patient care excellence.

 

This executive will oversee a high-performing team and manage a multi-billion-dollar spend portfolio, ensuring the organization remains agile, competitive, and resilient in a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.

Responsibilities

  • Defines and leads the long-term vision for pharmaceutical purchasing, aligning with corporate growth, clinical innovation, and financial performance goals
  • Serves as a strategic advisor to the C-suite on procurement trends, risk mitigation, and supply chain resilience
  • Leads enterprise-wide transformation initiatives in sourcing, vendor consolidation, and digital procurement capabilities for Home and Community pharmacies (LTC, Hospice, Infusion)
  • Represents PharMerica in industry forums, strategic alliances, and policy discussions impacting pharmaceutical access and pricing
  • Architects and executes national sourcing strategies for brand and generic pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, and equipment
  • Oversees the development of advanced analytics and forecasting models to drive data-informed purchasing decisions
  • Establishes enterprise-wide inventory optimization frameworks to balance cost, availability, and risk
  • Leads strategic partnerships with GPOs, manufacturers, and wholesalers to secure competitive pricing and supply continuity
  • Owns the pharmaceutical purchasing P&L, driving year-over-year cost savings, margin improvement, and working capital efficiency
  • Leads value-based contracting initiatives and alternative reimbursement models in collaboration with clinical and payer teams
  • Monitors and reports on key performance indicators (KPIs) to the executive team and board-level committees
  • Cultivates executive-level relationships with top-tier suppliers, pharmaceutical manufacturers, industry leaders, and regulatory bodies
  • Leads enterprise contract negotiations, dispute resolution, and strategic supplier development programs
  • Partners with internal stakeholders across pharmacy operations, clinical services, finance, compliance, and IT to ensure alignment and execution
  • Builds and leads a high-impact, future-ready purchasing organization with a focus on innovation, agility, and accountability
  • Champions a culture of continuous improvement, ethical sourcing, and professional development
  • Sponsors enterprise training programs to elevate procurement capabilities and cross-functional collaboration
  • Ensures full compliance with federal and state regulations (e.g., DSCSA, DEA, FDA) and internal audit standards
  • Oversees enterprise risk management strategies related to drug shortages, recalls, counterfeit prevention, and geopolitical disruptions
  • Establishes robust governance frameworks for supplier onboarding, contract lifecycle management, and ethical sourcing

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy, Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, or related field; PharmD or MBA strongly preferred
  • 15+ years of progressive leadership experience in pharmaceutical procurement or healthcare supply chain, including 7+ years in an executive or enterprise-level role
  • Proven success managing large-scale purchasing operations with national or multi-site scope
  • Deep expertise in pharmaceutical markets, pricing dynamics, GPO structures, and regulatory frameworks
  • Demonstrated ability to lead transformational change, influence at the board level, and deliver measurable business outcomes
