Job Summary:
The Farm Technician will provide support for the Waishkey Bay Farm and Food Sovereignty efforts of Bay Mills Community College, under the supervision of the Farm Manager. Position will be exposed to out-door weather conditions, in close proximity of livestock. Use of equipment such as farm tractor and implements, all-terrain vehicles, and other motorized tools will be required. This position is on-call and will work around 14 hours per month, including both weekday and weekends shifts.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide care for livestock, as directed, to include feeding, watering, removing manure, and tending bedding.
- Use of tractor, implements, and other equipment to cut grass or pasture, and in soil preparation, as directed.
- Perform outdoor grounds maintenance, which will include garden maintenance, snow removal, and associated tasks.
- Perform general maintenance and cleaning in all farm buildings, as necessary.
- Preparing for, assisting with and cleaning up after livestock processing activities according to farm standard operating procedures.
- Must attend or complete all training and meetings as required.
- Ensure tasks and duties are completed within the policies and procedures of Bay Mills Community College.
- Non-managerial and other duties may be requested within the scope and duties of the position.
- Other duties may be assigned within the scope and complexity of the position description.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Agricultural experience is strongly desired.
- Related experience with agricutulral equipment such as tractors.
- Valid government-issue driver’s license, and ability to be insured by BMCC insurance policies.
- Must be able to meet standards in an employee background investigation.
- Demonstrated understanding of and a commitment to the tribal college mission and purpose teaching and learning, high academic standards, and student success.
Education and Experience:
- Minimum of high school diploma or GED is required.
- Must have the ability to meet the physical requirements of the position.
- Excellent written communication and organization skills.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with others, college and departmental committee experience preferred.
- Knowledge or experience working with people of diverse backgrounds, abilities, and needs.
- Knowledge or experience in working with Native Americans, in an educational setting preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Duties are generally performed outside, while exposed to all types of weather conditions.
- Employee will regularly lift, move, push, and pull up to 100 pounds for performance of the position.
- The position will require sitting for periods of time while operating a tractor, reaching and manipulating objects with hands, shoveling, reaching, and walking while carrying objects.
