Qualifications
- Knowledge of the sport of basketball and the ability to teach skills and team concepts.
- Previous coaching or playing experience at the high school level or higher preferred.
- Willingness to attend coaching clinics, meetings, and training for continued development.
- Strong character and the ability to serve as a positive role model for student-athletes.
- Commitment to promoting sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, and academic success.
Reports To
Head Basketball Coach and Athletic Director
Supervises
Student-athletes, team managers, and others as assigned by the head coach.
Job Goal
To support the head coach in developing a competitive basketball program that helps student-athletes grow in skill, character, and teamwork, while promoting academic and personal success.
Duties and Responsibilities
Program Support
- Assist with planning and conducting practices and workouts.
- Help teach basketball fundamentals, offensive and defensive strategies.
- Support the team system and philosophy established by the head coach.
Student-Athlete Development
- Mentor student-athletes in both athletic and personal development.
- Encourage academic accountability and responsible behavior.
- Support the head coach in maintaining team discipline and a positive team culture.
Administrative Duties
- Attend all team practices, games, meetings, and events unless excused.
- Help manage equipment, uniforms, and practice/game setup.
- Assist with travel planning and team organization as needed.
Safety and Conduct
- Promote a safe and respectful environment during practices and games.
- Help enforce team rules and school policies.
- Respond appropriately to injuries and emergencies, working with trainers and parents.
Communication and Public Relations
- Communicate clearly and respectfully with players, parents, coaches, and school staff.
- Help promote the program within the school and community.
- Represent the program and school positively at all times.
Additional Expectations
- Follow all school, district, and VHSL (Virginia High School League) rules and guidelines.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the head coach or athletic director.
Terms of Employment
Seasonal position during the basketball season.
Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated by the Head Coach and/or Athletic Director according to school guidelines.
