Interim Special Education Team Chairperson Elementary (to cover a leave of absence) - 2025/2026
SUMMARY: As a Department Head, assist teachers and administration, subject to Special Education Laws, with the educational development of children with special education accommodations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensure that all Massachusetts Special Education regulations are followed and implemented. Assist in the administration of the Special Education Services procedures that have been designated throughout the system.
- Assist in the individual Team meetings to be held within the school. Chair Team meetings for the school assigned.
- Compile and coordinate assessments for the purpose of determining the best combination of regular and special educational services for each school age child identified as eligible for special education.
- Supervising and coordinating evaluation teams in evaluating and diagnosing children, in determining eligibility for special education and then designing appropriate educational programming. Coordinate the scheduling of Team meetings.
- Coordinate the transition of students on Individual Education Plans (IEPs) from middle school to high school.
- Monitor and complete the paperwork process associated with special education. Oversee the development of IEPs, timelines and all special education paperwork of assigned meetings.
- Read and review all Individualized Educational Programs for compliance and accuracy.
- Ensure timely communication with staff and parents. Involve parents in the evaluation and formation of educational planning.
- Monitor the progress of special education students as noted on progress reports, report cards and standardized testing.
- Complete staff evaluations in accordance with the Teacher’s Contract.
- Advise the Special Education Director and Program Director regarding inclusion and specialized programs. Communicate effectively with all administration about programs, staff and students.
- Promote and safeguard the confidentiality of student records according to the student record regulations. Assist in the data collection for state mandated special education reports.
- Perform any other relative duties as requested by the Director of Special Education.
The above are typical tasks regularly performed but additional related tasks of equivalent skills and responsibilities may be assigned as service and/or educational requirements change, subject to Collective Bargaining.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Supervises students in his/her care.
2. Evaluates special education dept staff in the building and follows evaluation procedures and timeline

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
BA degree, MA preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid Massachusetts Teaching Certificate, in area of study required.
Special Education Directors or Administrators license
SKILLS and ABILITIES:
- Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on building and district objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; high-level skills in oral and written communication.

Compensation:
In accordance with the Burlington Educators' Association Unit A contract.
