Sparta School District is seeking an efficient, organized and friendly individual to join our team as district bookkeeper. Preferred applicants will have prior experience in payroll, human resources, or other business-related office work. (minimum of 3 years). The selected candidate will start January 2026, and will work alongside the current bookkeeper to ensure a smooth transition into the role, officially taking over on July 1, 2026.
This is a full time position with benefits including paid health and life insurance, retirement, paid vacation and sick leave, as well as a 4 day work week. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Demonstrates aptitude of competence for assigned responsibilities.
2. Computer literate.

4. High School Diploma.
REPORTS TO: Superintendent
JOB GOAL: To assist in the administration of the district's business affairs so as to provide the maximum services for the financial resources available.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Maintains a complete and systematic set of records of all financial transactions of the district.
2. Records detail of school financial transactions in appropriate journals and subsidiary ledgers from such sources as requisitions, payroll records, etc.
3. Summarizes and balances entries recorded in individual journals and ledgers and
transfers data to general ledgers.
4. Prepares financial statements, income statements and cost reports to reflect financial
condition of the district.
5. Traces errors and records adjustment to correct debits or credits posted to incorrect
accounts.
6. Computes and records receipt summaries.
7. Reconciles canceled payroll and accounts payable checks with bank statements and verifies bank balance with statements.
8. Prepares withholding, social security, and tax returns.
9. Prepares and maintains district records needed for the annual audit report.
10. Assists the superintendent with the preparation of the annual budget.
11. Types a variety of materials.
12. Obtains and enters information necessary for DESE's Core Data Cycles.
13. Verifies totals on report forms, requisitions, etc.
14. Performs various related office duties as designated by the superintendent.
15. Performs all duties in accordance with federal, state, and local safety standards.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 month year. Salary and work week to be determined by the Board. Annual vacations (two weeks or as earned by length of employment) shall be taken during the year.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy of support services Personnel.
