Overview & Responsibilities

Primary function

To assemble, fit, disassemble, deburr, polish, land, function test, and hydro-test sub-assemblies

Tools & Equipment

A variety of hand tools, wrenches, punches, drifts, etc., presses, ovens, torches, sub-zero freezers, electrical heating elements, de-burring and polishing tools, jigs, drills, reamers, taps, hammers, vices, testing equipment, torque wrenches, drill press, pumps, valves, water test tank, gages, mandrels, retainers, and measuring equipment for clearance checks, manual mill and lathe equipment in support of final assembly tolerance for bearings, Ref: Bearings and safety equipment.  Measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, gauges, dial indicators, etc. Manually or laser etch parts.  They will utilize various material handling equipment to move and position their work such as jib cranes. Parts washer for cleaning used assemblies. 

Working Procedure

  • Receives work assignment and instructions from supervision.

  • Works from route sheets, assembly drawings, bill of materials, wiring diagrams, and work instruction written procedures where applicable.

  • Receives parts for sub-assemblies in the work area.

  • Cleans, deburrs, laps, lubricates, grinds, polishes, etc.

  • Degrease parts as required.

  • Performs simple layout for drilling and tapping operation.

  • Drills, taps, reams, and punches holes as required.

  • Assembles, fits, and aligns various sub-assemblies requiring close tolerances, utilizing available equipment / tools.

  • Checks and records height and width of nozzle ring blades and diaphragms.

  • Installs sealing rings and strips.

  • Scrapes, sands, hones, turns, and mills various parts such as bearing splits, liners, seats, shoes, housings, etc. prior to assembly to achieve correct fit.

  • Applies turbo-seal and/or silver seal to vertical joints.

  • Preheats material with steam and electric heating elements as required.

  • Makes keys for turbine diaphragms from bar stock.

  • Prepares components for hydrotesting by assembling and aligning components, installing gaskets, installing o-rings, installing studs, and tightening studs & bolts to a specified torque.

  • Installs pressure gauges, tail hoses, fittings, and fills components with fluid or gas.

  • Sets units / assemblies on test stand, aligns and makes pre-test checks. Makes operating adjustments and observations.

  • Sets and regulates pumps or bottled gauges to required pressure and maintains pressure for specified time.

  • Dis-assembles components after hydrotesting and cleans as required.

  • Utilizes tools and equipment necessary to check and adjust bearing clearances and bump checks as required. Repairs minor defects in babbitt that do not require foundry equipment.

  • Mounting of instruments and wiring to terminal blocks for hydraulic trip assemblies.

  • Notes malfunctions and makes correction adjustments.

  • Uses a job hoist, overhead crane, work saver, or fork lift truck to maneuver material.

  • Performs crane hooking and unhooking as required. Reports production count, time, and data verbally to supervisor or inspector. Enters clearance data into database.

  • Assist in developing and maintaining departmental procedures and associated process metrics related to process cost, quality, cycle time, and timeliness.

  • Wipes tools and keeps work areas clean.

  • Maintains good housekeeping by keeping tools, material, and equipment in proper place.

  • Reports defective material and equipment to supervision.

  • Observes all safety rules.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Must be able and willing to work 1st (7am-3pm), 2nd (3pm-11pm) and 3rd (11pm-7am) shifts. Shifts are not guaranteed and are subject to shift realignment. 

  • Must be able and willing to work overtime, weekends and holidays.
