RN On Call in Calhoun County and surrounding areas

Big Bend Hospice (BBH) is your “Hometown Hospice” providing compassionate end-of-life care for over 40 years to the Big Bend region. Guided by our values of integrity, respect, and excellence, we are seeking an experienced Triage/ On Call (RN) to join our Calhoun County and surrounding areas. 


The ideal candidate for the full-time RN On Call position will provide on-call support, and emergency after hour services to Big Bend Hospice patients in our Western Service area. This is an on the go, spring into action position. Must be willing to perform visits in the patients' homes after hours during the week and on the weekend. 


Position Duties and Responsibilities:  
The RN On Call responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following: 

  • Works with physicians, nurses, and patients to resolve questions concerning medications, health education, and medical advice within skill level and scope of practice.  
  • Serves as liaison between physicians, nurses, and patients. Manages and documents patient phone calls pertaining to medical conditions and questions according to established department routine.
  • Records and maintains complete and accurate records of patient and physician communications regarding medical care according to BBH medical record documentation requirements.
  • Responds to patient needs in a timely manner according to medical priority. Documents all incoming calls in the electronic medical record and notifies appropriate team members, providing documentation of such notification as indicated.
  • Responds to patient needs in an appropriate manner within skill level and BBH policies and, when appropriate, seeks provider advice when responding to patient’s medical care. Utilizes relevant data, such as medical records and patient complaints, observations, and listening skills, to identify and resolve problems in nursing care.
  • Serves as a resource to clinical staff regarding medical information, patient assessment, and management of patients’ terminal illnesses and related conditions.
  • Demonstrates ability to access information and perform appropriate documentation using the computer.  This includes care plans, medication sheets, and patient information screens.  Computer documentation is current and complete in EMR. Attends basic computer classes and updates. Uses the internet as a resource, assists others, troubleshoots computer problems, and exhibits updating of knowledge or expertise on a regular basis.
  • Submits electronically/faxes both new and refill prescriptions according to physician orders and applicable laws. Records all prescription/refill information in the medical record.
  • Performs to basic standards of Hospice and Palliative nursing.  
  • Assesses appropriateness based on physical evidence, history/physical, and supporting medical information. Completes general competencies. Completes nursing competencies as required. Achieves and maintains CHPN certification.  
  • Informs appropriate BBH staff/supervisor when a patient communicates a potential problem regarding a physician-patient relationship or patient concern with care rendered. Reacts in a positive manner to customer/patient concerns (i.e., remains calm and displays empathy).  
  • Demonstrates ability to assess interdisciplinary needs of patient and family/caregivers, providing information, education, and support and arranges visits as necessary. Surveys reflect patient/family satisfaction. Documentation is reflected in electronic medical records, including clinical notes.  
  • Communicates with other On-call staff to ensure quality care and appropriate follow-up and follow-through.
  • Performs other duties as requested.            

Work Schedule:  

  • (3) 12-hour shifts a week
  • 7 pm- 7am 

Travel Requirement: You must have a reliable vehicle and be willing to be dispatched throughout our service areas.

 This position will cover the following counties: 

  • Gadsden
  • Liberty
  • Calhoun
  • Jackson
  • Gulf

Skills & Qualifications


Education & Experience:

  • Valid/current Florida and/or Multistate compact licensure as an RN. 
  • Bachelor of Nursing Degree preferred. 
  • 3 years of nursing experience, preferably in hospice or home health. 
  • Hospice/Palliative Care experience required; CHPN preferred.

Skills & Abilities: 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to remain calm and troubleshoot/handle patient/family crisis situations.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Familiar with EMR systems. 

Requirements: 

  • Valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and reliable transportation. 
  • Active RN License
