As a Landscape Technician on the Project Forestry team, you will work closely with the Urban Forestry team to protect and preserve this valuable resource. You will provide leading-edge input on tree management strategies, and administer the Corporate Tree Management Policy (C456C) and the Public Tree Bylaw 18825 permit requirements. Technicians work closely with stakeholders to ensure tree protection mechanisms are in place when work occurs near a city tree.

What will you do?

  • Collect data in the field, including tree measurements and assessments, required for potential projects that take place around trees
  • Assess tree condition and collect data on City trees in GIS software
  • Reference landscape drawings and maps to determine tree ownership
  • Assist with various projects which may include recommendations and tree evaluations for monetary value
  • Coordinate contractor work to ensure compliance with City standards and agreements while advising and/or resolving any discrepancies in the work
  • Conduct field inspections and assess the progress and completion of contracted tree work
  • Ensure compliance with safety programs
  • Assist with the administration of the Corporate Tree Management Policy (C456C) as outlined in its procedures, and track and report any damages to tree assets
  • Review tree protection plans as they relate to the Public Tree Permit requirement(s) outlined in the Public Tree Bylaw 18825
  • Complete ground disturbance documents and one call requirements and issue ground disturbance permits
  • Respond to public complaints or inquiries, orally or in writing
  • Other related work as required

  • Completion of a 2-year technology diploma with an arboricultural emphasis or a related field, including the ability to identify and assess local tree species
  • 2 years experience in the landscaping industry

 

Assets: 

 

  • International Society of Arboriculture Certification
  • Possession of Standard First Aid and CPR Certification
  • Experience in landscape construction, nursery, and/or tree care
  • Experience in contract supervision
  • Knowledge of landscape construction procedures
  • Experience inspecting contractor work and dealing with contractors
  • Knowledge of GIS software, Microsoft Office, SAP, and SLIM

 

Skills required for success:
 

  • Knowledge of arboricultural techniques and practices
  • Knowledge of methods and standards common to the specifications of contract implementation
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively deal with the public
  • Proficiency in using Google Applications, such as Google Documents, Google Sheets and Google Meets
  • Ability to communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to establish priorities and effectively multitask

Conditions of Employment:

 

  • Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) or higher. Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Candidates will be required to arrange their own transportation and, where appropriate, will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the candidate to obtain business-use auto insurance.
  • Successful candidates are able to be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen and coveralls

 

Work Environment:

 

  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week

 

Salary Range: $33.316 - $41.847 (Hourly); $69,563.810 - $87,376.540 (Annually)
