GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB. The UNIT MANAGER participates as a member of the management team in planning, policy formulation, and administrative decision making for the Nursing Services Department in accordance with current existing federal, state and local standards. This position is responsible for patient care, management, resource management, and fiscal management in the nursing home.
STANDARD REQUIREMENTS

- Safety, including universal precautions and safe work practices, established fire/safety/disaster plans, risk management, and security, report and/or correct unsafe working conditions, equipment repair and maintenance needs
- Confidentiality of all data including resident, employee and operations data
- Quality Improvement and compliance with all regulatory requirements
- Compliance with current law and policy to provide a work environment free from sexual harassment and all illegal discriminatory behavior
- Supports and participates in common teamwork:
- Cooperates and works together with all co-workers
- Uses tactful, appropriate communications in sensitive and emotional situations
- Follows up as appropriate with supervisor, co-workers or residents regarding reported complaints, problems and concerns
- Completes requirements for in-service training, acceptable attendance, uniform and dress codes including personal hygiene, and other work duties as assigned
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES.
- Plan, develop, organize, implement evaluate and direct the Nursing Services Department according to federal, state, local and facility guide lines, as well as regulated programs and activities, including:
- Physician’s orders
- Medication reviews
- In-services/Training
- Utilization review
- Physicians visits
- Infection control
- Assess the quality of care rendered
- Review, monitor, intervene and report complaints/grievances made by residents, families, etc.
- Recognize and respond to changes in residents’ conditions and document observations, interventions, and outcomes
- Perform emergency procedures such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and report accidents or incidents in a timely manner
- Participate as an abuse coordinator for facility
- Coordinate resident profile meetings weekly
- Review and revise nursing care plans on a regular basis within the guidelines of federal, state and facility regulations/policy
- Initiates the development of policies and procedures that govern nursing services and other services under his or her position control
- Responsible for verifying employee credentials under his or her position control
- Responsible for staff performance, recruitment, retention and development
- Investigate and report employee incidents according to company policy and coordinate return to work programs with Human Resources
- Collaborate with other departments and agencies regarding resources and services for improved patient care and staff development
- Plan, develop and implement a budgeted process for staffing and services rendered
- Evaluates the quality and cost-effectiveness of staffing and services within the goals of the nursing home
- Serves as spokesperson for nursing matters and represents the nursing home with professional nursing and related organizations
- Participates in appropriate meetings and committees
- Prepare reports or recommendations for the Administrator regarding the operation of the Nursing Department
- Audit documentation for errors or inconsistencies; correct or document as necessary
- Inventory, identify and monitor the storage of equipment, supplies, etc.
- Maintain a reference library of written nursing materials to assist the Nursing Services Department in meeting residents needs
- Serve as a direct line supervisor for staff and act as DON in absence of the Director.
- Conduct routine rounds of facility to monitor residents progress.
- Review, monitor, intervene and report complaints/grievances made by residents, families, etc.
- Perform emergency procedures such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and report accidents or incidents in a timely manner
- Review and revise nursing care plans on a regular basis within the guidelines of federal, state and facility regulations/policy

- Act as facility designee of Risk Manager with oversight of all related programs, systems, and compliance with applicable policies and procedures.
- Perform internal case management for managed care recipients.
- Review and revise infection control programs, including immunizations of residents and employees, on a regular basis to ensure infectious processes are prevented and/or effectively managed to ensure the optimal health status of all residents and employees.
Follow Unit Manager to do Checklist Unit Managers Daily Responsibilities
- Review 24 hour reports & get report from charge nurses
- Review all new TO’S, and ensure they are complete and implemented
- Review all labs and ensure critical labs were called to physician and addressed
- Review pharmacy reports for accuracy and cost effectiveness
- Contact manage care for authorization for outliers for high cost meds
- Attend clinical ops meeting
- Attend admission meeting
- Review all new and readmit charts utilizing the check off form, instruct charge nurse what needs followed up on and what needs clarified.
- Introduce your self to the new admits and explain your role, after 72 hours write summary on 72 hour form.
- Ensure follow up is done as directed to your charge nurses, labs, x-rays, appts, chg in condition, orders, etc
- Check medication room and clean utility to ensure compliance.
- Do rounds on your unit at least twice a day to ensure compliance, ensure the corrections are made where necessary.
- Follow up on change in condition on residents
- Ensure follow up that you assigned from the previous day was completed
- Ensure staffing is posted on board for 7-3 then again for 3-11
- Monitor dining rooms to ensure resident are serviced correct diet and are consuming meals.
- Do rounds with physicians as indicated.
- Assist your charge nurses as indicated
- Ensure your charge nurses are updating C.N.A care plans are updated. They are easier to keep up with if they do them in pencil.
- Update nursing care plans as indicated.
- Update/Review care plan with any incidents • Ensure staff is following infection control program
- Update your profile and 672 as indicated.
- Ensure your weights are completed and recorded. Address any weight discrepancies
- Address any resident or family concerns.
- Ensure RP, family and physician notification was done and documented on any change of condition, etc.
Weekly Unit Managers Responsibilities
- Attend care plan meetings on Tuesday and Thursday
- Provide weekly updates to manage care case managers
- Complete and have profile form and 672 completed and turned into DON, by Thursday pm. Please provide MDS, Wound care, Weekend supervisor, Assistant Administrator, RD, Risk manager and Soc. Service with copies of profile and 672.
- Attend weekly resident profile / risk meeting on planned day (Please come prepared)
- Attend UR on assigned day
- Attend weekly standup at 9:00 am on Monday and Friday
- Do weekly compliance rounds. Please submit copies of findings to Administrator, Assistant Admin, Maintenance Director, Housekeeping Director, Risk Manager, and DON.
- Please review wound report weekly and ensure you have looked at the wounds on your unit and your staff is aware and what interventions are in place.
- Ensure nurses are updating C.N.A care plan.
- Weekly weights need to be completed and recorded on Mondays. Weekly weights of 5 or more loss or gain a reweight needs to be done immediately. Review your weights and submit a copy to the DON and RD. Address any weight changes.
- Review MAR’s and TAR’s for omissions.
- Do random audits of charts to ensure documentation, evaluations / assessments are completed. 24 hour chart checks are being done.
- Address any staff concerns as needed.
- Check with Staffing Coordinator to ensure your unit is covered with the correct amount of staff.
- Ensure monthly assessments and Resident data set are completed as assigned.
- Complete staff evaluations for the month and submit to the Director of Nursing.
- Complete consultant Pharmacy report and submit to Director of Nursing.
Monthly Unit Managers Duties
- Attend Monthly Nurses and C.N.A Meetings
- Conduct a monthly meeting with your staff
- Work an off hour shift or come in early or stay late to see how your staff is doing.
- Attend Monthly Psychoactive meeting
- Attend Monthly DON meeting
- Review all new monthly weights and address concerns
- Review Pharmacy recommendations and address recommendations.
- Review your falls, weight loss, infections, insulin orders, Coumadin orders and wounds and ensure they were addressed during the month.

EDUCATION
Current state RN/LPN license
EXPERIENCE
Two to four years related experience and/or training
LANGUAGE SKILLS.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
COMPUTER SKILLS
Ability to use Microsoft programs: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Must be comfortable using programs and servers for care plans, resident information systems, payroll, etc.
REASONING ABILITY.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
