About the Department

The Landscaper, reporting to the Tenant Operations Manager, performs various tasks to maintain functional and attractive outdoor areas. Responsibilities also include caring for indoor gardens and plants in public and commercial spaces, such as gardens and apartment complexes, and performing semi-skilled maintenance and pest control for PYT housing properties.

Position Duties

  1. Responsible for assisting in the overall maintenance of landscaped areas and common areas of tribal properties;  
  2. Planting and providing general care of trees, shrubs, flowers, and grass;
  3. Maintain irrigation drip systems; remove trash and debris for assigned areas;
  4. Note any damage or hazards, repair minor damage, and correct hazardous conditions;
  5. Remove weeds, trees, hedges, and shrubs from planted areas, treat and condition soil, and plant according to established schedules;
  6. Assist with the overall maintenance of landscaped areas for housing and common areas;
  7. Assist Housing Maintenance with general to semi-skilled labor to maintain properties;  
  8. Conduct general maintenance duties such as cleaning walkways, fixing fountains, etc;
  9. Replace defective or broken drip system heads, remove obstructions from drip system components, and make minor adjustments to valves, heads, and controls;
  10. Operate power mowers, chain saws, power clippers, rollers, spreaders, and similar equipment;
  11. May operate maintenance equipment such as backhoes, forklifts, large front-end loaders, small tractors, power mowers, rollers, spreaders, pickup or light dump trucks, and similar equipment; maintains hand tools and assigned equipment;
  12. Ensure safe and proper tying down of equipment for transport;
  13. Provide burial services for the community by setting up ramadas;
  14. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as requested by the supervisor or director;

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Grounds keeping, light construction, facilities and equipment maintenance methods, tools, and safety practices;
  • Manual and automatic sprinkler and drip irrigation system operation and maintenance;
  • Grass and plant care, deficiency symptoms, and appropriate method of correction;
  • Occupational hazards and required preventative measures;
  • Yaqui culture, customs, resources, and traditions and/or a willingness to learn.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Plant, cultivate and care for shrubs and flowers;
  • The use of equipment and tools of the trade;
  • The proper application of chemicals;
  • Use hand, power tools and equipment effectively and safely;
  • Work outside in varying weather conditions;
  • Handle exposure to chemical fumes, loud noises, and heights;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public;
  • Follow oral and written instruction;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, management, Council members, and the public. Can sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive verbal and written work instructions.

Other Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED, two (2) years experience in landscaping or groundskeeping role and basic construction trades; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of an Arizona Structural Pest Control Commission Certification in one of the following categories: Turf & Ornamental, Weed General Pest Control or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire;
  • Possession of/or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire, certification in the remaining two categories;
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License;
  • This position will require the incumbent to work non-traditional hours, nights, and weekends;
  • Must have a current Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card or be able to obtain the Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card within ninety (90) days of hire. Failure to maintain a current Level 1 Clearance Card will result in termination.
