Job Summary:

To provide legal services to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), including litigation supervision, contract review, administrative legal reviews, counsel on human resources and academic affairs, and other legal advice and support as needed.

Education & Experience

Education and Experience Required:

Juris Doctor (J.D) from an accredited law school and five (5) years of legal experience in medical and education laws, regulations, and rules.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:

Must have membership or be eligible for membership to the Mississippi bar association before commencing work.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong management and leadership abilities, with excellent written and verbal communication skills. Skilled in problem-solving, negotiation, mediation, and arbitration. Demonstrated decision-making, analytical, and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provides legal advice and counsel to key stakeholders across the UMMC campus, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and institutional policies.
  • Manages legal matters for assigned departments or units and oversees specific areas within the legal department.
  • Represents UMMC in transactions and negotiations with external parties, including buyers, sellers, and vendors; prepares legal documents and coordinates with outside counsel as necessary.
  • Performs legal and administrative functions across multiple practice areas, including academic affairs, human resources, healthcare, litigation, and transactional law; reviews legal documents and prepares formal legal opinions.
  • Participates in institutional committees to support governance and strategic decision-making.

Physical and Environmental Demands
Requires occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, frequent travelling to offsite locations, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, occasional lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds, occasional driving, occasional reaching, constant sitting, occasional standing, and occasional walking.
