SUMMARY:  The Pharmacist working in conjunction with the Pharmacy Director is responsible for the overall, operation and maintenance of MedNorth Health Center’s pharmaceutical services.

PRIMARY DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: (other duties may be assigned)  

  • Receive medication orders from patients.
  • Takes a brief medication history regarding allergies and adverse reactions to drugs.
  • Obtains birth date, address and telephone number of patient if not recorded on Prescription.
  • Price prescription drugs and other items (supplies) to be dispensed.
  • Package, prepare labels, and label medications for dispensing.
  • Maintains an orderly prescription file for controlled substances and all other prescriptions. 
  • Takes a daily inventory of drugs and supplies and places orders when necessary.
  • Maintains cleanliness and neatness of equipment and work area.
  • Unpacks and stores in-coming supplies including controlled substances:
  • Verify items against order
  • Apply pharmacy labels to prepared items when necessary
  • Stocks items in an orderly manner
  • Ensures that pharmacy is operating in accordance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations, including licensure and appropriate registration of pharmacy.
  • Monitors proper storage and usage of pharmaceuticals in non-pharmacy areas, such as refrigerators, examination rooms and crash carts.
  • Collects funds from patients for prescriptions dispensed.
  • Ensures that work reflects established organizational standards and procedures, promotes introduction of new and innovative concepts when appropriate.
  • Ensures adequate record keeping for pharmacy purchasing, packaging and distribution functions, including controlled substances.
  • Acts as a consultant to patients and professional staff when requested.
  • Checks for proper dosage.
  • Screens for possible drug-interaction.
  • Checks for safe use in children (age appropriate), pregnancy/lactation and specific disease states.
  • Determines and records other drug therapy patients may be taking, pertinent lab values, drug allergies and chronic disease states.
  • Assesses patient compliance, drug effectiveness and adverse drug reactions.
  • Consults with health care providers, both verbally and in writing; via the medical record concerning patient drug therapy when appropriate.
  • Using suitable verbal, written or audio-visual communication techniques and methods, the pharmacist should inform, educate and counsel patients (or their representative or guardian) about the following items for each medication in the patient’s drug regimen.
  • Name.
  • Intended use and expected action.
  • Route dosage form, dosage and administration schedule.
  • Special directions for preparation.
  • Special directions for administration.
  • Precautions to be observed during administration.
  • Common side effects that may be encountered.
  • Techniques for self-monitoring of drug therapy.
  • Proper storage.
  • Potential drug-drug or drug-food interaction, drug-lab test interactions.
  • Prescription refill information.
  • Informs patients of action to be taken in the event of a drug related adverse reaction.
  • Answer patients’ questions about their specific disease (s) state.
  • Prepares patient education materials and participate in community patient education programs, as requested.
  • Assists in Drug Formulary maintenance, review and revision.  Evaluates potential formulary products and prepares summary reports for presentation to the P & T Committee.
  • Performs additional duties incidental to work described herein as directed by the Pharmacy Director.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and procedures as well as applicable law.  Supervisory responsibilities include: 

  • Pharmacy Technician.

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:  include the following:

  • Upkeep of pharmacy logs as required by law.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skills, and/or ability required: 

  • Minimum of BS Degree in Pharmacy.
  • North Carolina licensure in good standing.
  • At least three to four years retail pharmacy experience.
  • Experience in providing comprehensive clinically oriented ambulatory care pharmacy services preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent record-keeping skills.
  • Working knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations regarding pharmacy practice.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of BS Degree in Pharmacy.

LANGUAGE SKILLSAbility to speak English fluently.  The ability to speak other languages is a plus.

REASONING ABILITY:    Must be able to identify a problem, make a decision on one of the possible solutions, implement the decision, and evaluate the results.

ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL/MOTOR SKILLS:  Pharmacy, medical terminology, accurate keyboarding skills, ability to process work error free.  Ability to use standard office equipment, including computers, photocopiers, and facsimile machines. 

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:  Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.   Teamwork and communication skills essential. Treat all patients, co-workers, and managers with courtesy and respect.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATIONSNorth Carolina Pharmacy License.

Inside a multi-cultural medical/dental clinic, which delivers comprehensive health care services to the disadvantaged, and underserved.  The building is heated in winter and air conditioned in the summer with noise levels of moderate to loud.  Children crying and screaming.  Loud talking patients.  Patients speaking multiple languages at the same time.  Loudspeaker and/or paging.  May be subject to exposure to copier toner, correction fluid, bright fluorescent lighting, and continuous personal computer exposure.

This job is a Blood borne Pathogen’s risk Category III position.
