INFORMATION LITERACY SPECIALIST

1.0 FTE

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master’s degree
  2. Valid Michigan teaching certificate with endorsement in an area of, library media, technology, reading, or related field.
  3. Three years of classroom experience preferred.
  4. Demonstrated ability in the use of information technology.
  5. Demonstrated ability in instructional design.
  6. Other alternatives to the above that the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

       

 

REPORTS TO:   Building Principal and Assistant Superintendent of Early Childhood and Elementary Education

 

JOB GOAL:  To implement the District Information Literacy and Media program at every building.  Targeted focus on integration of technology, literacy and literature to support the district curriculum and standards.

                                     

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Participates in collaboratively-planned instruction, assessment of student progress, and evaluation of activities.
  • Provides student instruction that incorporates information literacy into classroom lessons including inquiry and research skills, online searching and evaluation, and digital creating and sharing.
  • Provides instruction that leads students to construct new knowledge through acquiring and synthesizing information, and to communicate their learning through authentic, transfer-oriented tasks.
  • Instructs in the use of and communicates to students various methods for accessing all types of information sources.
  • Creates lessons, delivers instruction, and promotes the ethical and legal use of information, intellectual property, and social media safety.
  • Assists in differentiation of instruction with both individual students and small groups.
  • Creates an environment that encourages literature appreciation and promotes reading for information, connecting students to books using assorted techniques. 
  • Provides instruction in the use of technology to access information within and outside the library media center and promotes the use of electronic resources provided by other entities, e.g. public libraries and the Michigan eLibrary.
  • Participates in evaluation of services and instruction on a regular basis with feedback from various members of the school community.
  • Evaluates, promotes, and uses existing and emerging technologies to support teaching and learning and supplement school resources, connect the school with the global learning community, communicate with students and teachers, and provide access to library services.
  • Creates an environment that is conducive to active learning, cooperation, and collaboration, and one which provides flexible access and encourages the use of information resources to all school community members.
  • Evaluates, acquires, and organizes information resources and technologies in print, digital, and other formats in accordance with District policy.
  • Initiates, develops, and implements policies and procedures for the operation of the library media center in accordance with district policy.
  • Cooperatively works with other district staff members on curriculum and educational technology initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or Directors of Elementary and Secondary Curriculum.
  • Participates in the curriculum development process at both the building and district level. Ensures that the curricula include instruction of information literacy skills necessary to meet content standards and develop lifelong learners.
  • Collaborates with teachers to build and strengthen connections between student information skills, curricular content, learning outcomes, and information resources.
  • Assists teachers in developing resource-based units and activities, integrating information literacy instruction, resources, and assessment within the curriculum.
  • Provides leadership in assessing, evaluating, and implementing informational and instructional technologies.
  • Promotes and develops skills amongst staff in the use of evolving digital tools and instructional technologies to engage students, improve learning outcomes, and create classroom efficiency.
  • Provides professional development opportunities for staff around 21st century learning skills. 
  • Fulfills requests for specific information and resources aligned with student needs and curricula.
  • Collaborates with outside sources for additional resources and programs for the school community.
  • Remains current in professional practices and developments, educational technologies, and research.
