GENERAL PURPOSE
As an Engineering Intern, performs a variety of entry-level engineering professional and technical duties as needed to assist in coordinating and participating in the design, development and construction of city infrastructure. Internship is from April 27-August 28.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the City Engineer and Assistant City Engineer
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Conducts engineering review and approval of commercial and residential project plans and construction drawings during building permit review process; ensures compliance with codes and standards; screens for traffic and parking issues, drainage issues, right-of-way issues.
Coordinates a variety of operations and activities undertaken by engineering staff related to traffic and signalization project design and management, infrastructure analysis and public works systems; coordinates project priorities; prepares engineering reviews and reports for proposed projects and developments; completes preliminary design of utility systems; aids in establishing city master plan for various utility systems. Works with City water modeling to update model and provide feedback on system requirements.
Serves as liaison with federal, state, county, and local jurisdictions; represents the city as staff to various commissions and task forces; prepares various reports, projections, and evaluations as required; provides input to city council and committees as required.
Assists with various aspects of project management and scheduling; ensures adherence with established standards and work plans, processes and procedures; coordinates legal activities and requirements; prepares change orders; monitors engineering consultant activities and work to assure compliance with standards and contract specifications; assures timely completion; conducts and coordinates project inspections.
Reviews public works project site plans to determine compliance with established public works policies, rules, regulations, ordinances, etc.; may perform periodic public works inspections to assure compliance with material specifications and work quality.
Conducts traffic studies to support public safety enforcement and compliance with state and local codes; conducts traffic studies to support project design projections.
Develops rough drafts, maps, designs, and prints of projects; prepares legal descriptions of properties and submits to the county for recording; prepares road projects according to city standards and as required by law preparatory to being bid by contractors; prepares construction bid specifications; checks bids by contractors and prepares abstracts of bids.
Uses AutoCAD software to draft lots, parcels, splits, property boundaries, subdivisions using aerial photos; draws maps showing bearings, distances, ownerships, and geographical landmarks; draws graphs, charts, maps and other visual displays for special presentations or reports.
Uses AutoCAD software to draw, update and maintain city maps, charts and other drawings; calculator, computer, and survey instruments as needed to create or make changes on maps showing boundaries, property lines, property descriptions or zoning designations; gathers GIS information related to city infrastructure adding data to the GIS process.
Performs routine drafting as needed to update city maps to show changes in city boundaries, additions of subdivisions, streets, etc.; performs drafting of engineering designs to show existing improvements, right-of-ways, utilities, roadways, buildings, etc.
Prepares preliminary streets, water, and sewer and related infrastructure designs; makes calculations requiring arithmetic, trigonometry, and algebra; performs field and/or site reviews to gather project information to assure accurate calculations, charts, maps, etc.; creates drawings from survey data using computer aided design software (AutoCAD).
Prepares reports, letters, and analysis using word processing, database and spreadsheet programs; uses computer programs, such as GIS, to manage data and simulation programs for the analysis, studying and modeling of infrastructure systems.
Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Education and Experience:
- Two years of college in Civil Engineering discipline;
AND
- Minimum GPA of 3.0;
AND
- Prefer prior internship or equivalent work experience.
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of computerized engineering systems and instruments (CAD) and related peripheral equipment; use of a variety of technical engineering equipment. Some knowledge of computerized office programs; political, legal and governmental processes affecting various engineering program and project management, software applications and basic programming related to specific engineering software; civil engineering methods, principles and practices; construction methods and materials common to public works projects; uniform building codes; planning and zoning codes; engineering standards and codes; technical and practical design of public works systems; interpersonal communication skills; the use of a variety of technical engineering equipment.
Skill in the use of various engineering software applications.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; read and interpret plans and specifications; visualize completed projects in planning stages and estimate the end results; estimate quantity of materials accurately; develop and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, federal agencies, state agencies, local governments, co-workers, and the public.
- Work Environment:
Tasks require a variety of physical activities not generally involving muscular strain. Physical demands may occur in activities related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting, etc. Talking, hearing and seeing required in the daily performance of job duties. Mental application utilizes memory for details, emotional stability and discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. Periodic travel required in course of performing portions of job functions.
