Invitation to Serve: Dissertation Committee Chairs & Members. An Opportunity to Shape the Future of Humanistic Healthcare Research.

The Medical & Health Humanities program at Drew University invites distinguished scholars to join our dissertation committee community as Chairs or Members specializing in Qualitative Research Methodology and/or Care Ethics & Studies. We are cultivating a vibrant intellectual community of doctoral scholars committed to advancing humanization in healthcare through rigorous qualitative inquiry. As our dissertation student pool grows, we seek experienced researchers who are passionate about mentoring the next generation of scholar-practitioners examining the lived experiences of patients, caregivers, clinicians, and communities.

This is a service opportunity for established researchers who wish to contribute to doctoral education and engage with cutting-edge scholarship at the intersection of health, humanities, and qualitative methods. Your mentorship will directly shape innovative research that bridges theory and practice in healthcare humanities.

Primary Mentorship Responsibilities:

  • Guide doctoral candidates in designing methodologically sophisticated qualitative and mixed methods research
  • Provide expert feedback on contemporary qualitative approaches and care studies, and their application to healthcare contexts
  • Supervise the development of research proposals and prospectuses for IRB submission
  • Foster scholarly rigor while supporting candidates' intellectual growth and development
  • Collaborate with program leadership to maintain academic standards and program integrity

Why Serve?

  • Intellectual engagement: Work with motivated doctoral scholars on timely, meaningful research addressing humanization in healthcare
  • Academic legacy: Shape emerging scholars who will influence healthcare practice, policy, and research
  • Scholarly community: Join a network of committed students and faculty advancing the medical and health humanities and care studies field
  • Flexible contribution: Remote modality allows you to mentor from anywhere

If you are an experienced qualitative researcher or care studies/care ethics scholar who values mentorship and wishes to contribute to transformative doctoral education, we welcome your inquiry.

Although we provide an honorarium, this role is mainly a scholarly service position. We prioritize individuals driven by intellectual curiosity and dedication to the development of doctoral students.

Honorarium Compensation:
Honorarium is $650 for the first reader and $450 for the second reader upon completion of the dissertation. To acknowledge the critical work of the first reader in developing the dissertation, Drew also pays a $150 stipend for up to three semesters of dissertation advising.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. or other Doctoral Degree in the Health Sciences, Medical or Health Humanities, or another relevant field.
  • Must demonstrate expertise in the design and execution of qualitative research methodology in healthcare contexts.
  • Demonstrated expertise in successful dissertation advising (at least one example of completed dissertation advising work is required).
  • Be available for regular meetings and provide written feedback within two to three weeks after submission.
  • Being able to work at a pace that will support the momentum and progress of a doctoral candidate toward timely completion of the doctoral degree (1-2 years).
  • Compassionate individuals who genuinely care about the student’s learning experience and the everyday challenges that come with working on a dissertation.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants with expertise in phenomenology, grounded theory, narrative inquiry, arts-based methodology, and critical discourse analysis. Candidates who engage with various qualitative research conferences on a regular basis (e.g. ICQI, ECQI, IIQM), and candidates with mentorship and teaching experience in qualitative research methods at the graduate level are preferred.
