General Summary 

The Lead VFX FLO Technical Artist ensures that shots and sequences are completed successfully for delivery by identifying problems, independently debugging them, and utilizing generalist skills to help fix shots and assets. The Lead VFX FLO Technical Artist will be proactive in anticipating the needs of production and VFX artists, communicate reoccurring issues, document solutions, and share resources for the Technical Artist team to be successful and productive.  

Job Functions 

  • Lead the Technical Artist team by engaging in sequence, shot, and asset troubleshooting, collaborating closely with supervisors and shop leads to complete shots.
  • Validate USD shot structures, identify issues, and implement solutions.
  • Collaborate with sequence supervisors to ensure that the structure and contents of shots meet technical and creative requirements.
  • Assist VFX departments with debugging anomalies with USD shot workflows.  
  • Collaborate with pipeline TDs to ensure existing tools are functioning appropriately.
  • Understand the technical standards established by the Director and VFX Supervisor, and support VFX teams to achieve these standards.
  • Debug problems across the VFX USD pipeline, clarify issue ownership, and help define solutions for specific tools.
  • Interface with production systems and tools to address technical issues in overlapping areas and guide problem solving conversations across teams.  
  • Foster a close relationship with the Digital Pipeline team to support the studio’s VFX pipeline.  

Qualifications 

  • 5+ years’ experience in VFX on feature films and/or television.
  • Background in computer science, mathematics, engineering, or a related field with a specialization in rendering using RenderMan.  
  • Experience with scripting/programming in C, C++, Python, or similar languages.
  • Experience with ShotGrid preferred.  
  • Thorough understanding of USD in a VFX workflow.  
  • Knowledge of DCC software programs such as Maya, RenderMan, Katana, Nuke, and Houdini.  
  • In-depth knowledge of VFX concepts such as rendering and compositing.  
  • Strong attention to detail combined with advanced technical skills to guide sequences towards completion.  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to work within all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, open to direction, and responsive to changing production needs.
