The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office provides the care, custody, control, and rehabilitation of inmates. We are committed to providing the highest level of service to the OPSO community. The Communications Division serves as a dispatch office for Capias, Special Operations and Inmate Transportation. The Communications Division is also responsible for issuing radio numbers for the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office as well as maintaining inventory of all portable handheld radio numbers issued.
Job Responsibilities
- Issue radio numbers
- Receive phone calls from the general public making inquiries on those incarcerated.
- Receive phone calls for those persons who cannot report to work for various reasons and advise their supervisors.
- Transfer calls to various departments within the Sheriff’s Office.
- Prepare a weekly Department of Corrections JAIL CENUS report to Louisiana Department of Corrections.
- Schedules appointments and give information to workers.
- Schedule and dispatch workers, work crews, equipment or service vehicles for conveyance of materials, freight, or passengers or for normal installation, service or emergency repairs rendered outside the place of business
- Address problems and request by transmitting information or providing solutions.
- Receive and dispatch orders for products or deliveries.
- Ensure information is communicated accurately and in a timely manner.
Minimum Experience and Educational Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Considerable knowledge of departmental policies
- Possess general clerical skills adequate for the position

Job-related environmental factors: The employee works in an indoor environment, but will occasionally work in outdoor weather conditions. The employee works a significant amount of time inside a detention center, dealing on a daily basis with inmates. While good behavior is expected of the inmates, some contact may be had with inmates who are or may be violent or have a mental illness. Working conditions can be highly stressful.
Physical demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift or move office products and supplies up to 50 pounds.
