Facility Technician - Irrigation Specialist

Purpose Statement

The job of Facility Technician - Irrigation Specialist is done for the purpose/s of maintaining irrigation systems; providing information and documentation of activities; and ensuring adequate materials are available for timely completion of job functions.

 

This job reports to Integrated Trades Foreman 

Essential Functions

  • Arranges furniture and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for special events.
  • Assesses problems and/or failures in irrigation systems for the purpose of identifying repair and/or replacement needs.
  • Constructs landscaping items and fixtures for the purpose of modifying and/or adapting facilities to specific needs.
  • Coordinates with administration and athletic coaches for the purpose of adjusting irrigation programs for a variety of school event.
  • Designs new irrigation systems, planting areas, etc. for the purpose of ensuring specifications meet established requirements and ease of grounds maintenance, and preserving a healthy, attractive and safe condition.
  • Inspects irrigation systems for the purpose of identifying repair and/or replacement needs and maintaining schedules.
  • Installs repairs, maintains and tests back flow valves, Centralized Irrigation System, flow meters, master valves, etc. for the purpose of ensuring safe, efficient and effective systems.
  • Installs chain link fence, snow fence and other fence products for the purpose of controlling snow, people, traffic, etc.
  • Locates irrigation lines for contractors for the purpose of avoiding unnecessary damage.
  • Maintains supplies, equipment and tools for the purpose of ensuring adequate materials are available to complete assignments in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Operates heavy equipment (e.g. tractor, bobcat, skid loader, dump truck, trenchers,  ) for the purpose of installing and maintaining irrigation systems.
  • Performs a variety of landscaping activities (e.g. mowing, fertilizing, planting, spraying weeds, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining school grounds.
  • Prepares documentation for the purpose of providing written support, conveying information and complying with legal requirements.
  • Removes snow for the purpose of ensuring parking lots and sidewalks are safe for vehicles and people.
  • Repairs all components of an irrigation system (e.g. timers, clocks, sprinklers, control valves, pipes, wiring systems, etc.) for the purpose of keeping it operating according to its design.
  • Requests equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of required items.
  • Transports various items (e.g. tools, equipment, supplies, furniture, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at a job site.

Other Functions

Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: handling hazardous materials; operating equipment used in construction; planning and managing projects; and preparing and maintaining accurate records. KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems.  Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: safety practices and procedures.

ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a wide variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of processes. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate to significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; displaying mechanical aptitude; meeting deadlines and schedules; working as part of a team; working with detailed information/data; and working flexible hours when needed.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing.  The job is performed under temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

 

Experience: Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required.

Education: Community college and/or vocational school degree with study in job-related area.

Equivalency Required Testing: Alcohol and Drug Test

Certificates: Back Flow Certification

Journeyman Plumber's, Low Voltage License

 

Valid Class A Driver’s License & Evidence of Insurability

 

Continuing Educ./Training: As needed

Clearances: Fingerprint/Criminal Justice Background
