JOB PURPOSE:

The Data Governance Specialist drives and supports our data governance initiatives and ensures the integrity, quality, and security of our organization's data assets. This role is responsible for implementing data governance frameworks, policies, and processes to support AF’s strategic objectives and regulatory compliance requirements.
This role is responsible for implementing specific aspects of the data governance program, such as policies, processes, and tools to ensure that AF’s data has a high level of accuracy, it is secured, actively managed, and all related compliance policies are followed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Data Governance Strategy:
- Support the definition and implementation of the organization's data governance vision, strategy, and roadmap.
- Define and measure the key performance indicators (KPIs) associated with the data governance program, identifying deviations and recommending corrective actions.
- Enable effective data stewardship and accountability through the definition of supporting processes and tools.
- Manage assigned initiatives of the Data Governance Roadmap and drive them to completion.
- Policy and Process Development and Management:
- Document and implement data governance policies, standards, and procedures.
- Define data classification schemes, data ownership models, and data lifecycle management practices.
- Implement and manage data cataloging and lineage plotting processes, enabling automation, when possible, through the appropriate tools.
- Ensure alignment with regulatory requirements, industry standards, and best practices.
- Data Quality Management:
- Implement data quality standards, metrics, and monitoring mechanisms.
- Collaborate with data owners and stewards to identify data quality issues and root causes.
- Implement data quality improvement initiatives and corrective actions as needed.
- Data Security and Privacy:
- Support the development and enforcement of data security and privacy policies, controls, and procedures.
- Ensure proper support and monitoring of access controls, data encryption, and other security measures to mitigate risks.
- Metadata Management and Documentation:
- Implement metadata management processes to capture and maintain data lineage, definitions, and dependencies.
- Manage the cataloging and lineage plotting tool stack and ensure adoption by data owners and stewards.
- Establish data dictionaries, taxonomies, and glossaries to facilitate metadata discovery and documentation.
- Data Governance Education and Awareness:
- Provide guidance to employees on data governance processes and procedures, as well as training on the data governance tool stack.
- Raise awareness of data management best practices and their importance to business operations.
- Foster a culture of data stewardship, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Data Governance Oversight and Reporting:
- Implement and support mechanisms for governance oversight, including regular reviews and audits.
- Monitor compliance with data governance policies and assess effectiveness of controls.
- Prepare and present data governance reports, dashboards, and metrics to senior leadership.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience, Education and Licensure
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, or a related field.
- Experience in data architecture, data management, data governance, data science, or a related role.
- Strong understanding of data governance principles, frameworks, and best practices.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements and industry standards related to data privacy and security.
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in data modeling, database design, and data warehousing (e.g., SQL, NoSQL, Hadoop, MS Azure cloud, etc.).
- Understanding of cloud-based data platforms (Snowflake, Databricks).
- Experience with ETL/ELT tools and data integration technologies (e.g., Apache, DBT, Informatica, Matillion, Talend).
- Working knowledge of cloud services (i.e., MS Azure, AWS, Google Cloud).
- Strong understanding of data catalogs and lineage plotting practices and tools.
- Familiarity with data visualization and reporting tools (e.g., Webfocus, Power BI).
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or SQL.
Soft Skills:
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Ability to lead projects and mentor junior staff.
- Auto Insurance claims industry experience preferred.
