About the Department

Under the general direction of the Tax Collector has the dual responsibility for assisting cashier with daily workload while analyzing and processing billing changes and escrow paperwork. Provide tax knowledge to customers, as needed.  Work closely with the office staff to maintain customer records.  Ability to multi-task and be cross trained in all necessary work.

Position Duties

  • Performs varied and difficult/complex clerical and/or sub-professional accounting tasks.
  • Responds to questions from the public concerning a number of different services or provides explanations to semi-technical regulations in a specialized field.
  • Ability to review and decipher new tax legislation. 
  • Provide direct administrative support to the admin cashier, which may include providing back up at the counter and handling customer complaints.
  • Review, analyze and process all corrected, add-on and adjusted bills.
  • Maintain all escrow payment files while keeping these accounts up to date with accurate homeowner information.
  • Analyze and process all refunds due to customers.
  • Run necessary reports to aide in analyzing processing errors.
  • Work closely with other town offices to review all adjustments associated
  • Maintain strict confidentiality depending on the assignment.  
 
Additional Duties: 
  • Operates various office machines, including, but not limited to, calculators, copiers, faxes, and personal computers.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • The skills and knowledge required would generally be acquired with a High School Diploma or GED and three (3) years ‘experience performing moderately difficult administrative or account keeping tasks.
  • Thorough knowledge of office terminology, procedures, and equipment; thorough knowledge of business arithmetic and English.
  • Good knowledge of modern clerical accounting practices. Some knowledge of professional accounting practices.
  • Ability to follow complex oral and written directions and to prepare complex fiscal and other reports.
  • Ability to make minor decisions in accordance with laws, ordinances, regulations, and established policies.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.  
  • Ability to utilize various office automation software, including word processing systems, spreadsheets, and database management programs.
  • Ability to deal effectively with others, including the public and co-workers.
Supervised By: 
  • Receives general supervision from the Department Head or designee.

Each candidate must have had the minimum required experience and training to be eligible to participate for the exam for this position.   

The weight of the examination will be 80% experience and training and 20% oral examination. The candidates will be ranked based on their experience and training, which based on the information contained in their employment application, and the results of a computer skills test.  

This examination will be conducted for the Town of Trumbull by the Trumbull Civil Service Board within the authority of Section 7-413 of the 1959 revision of the State of CT General Statutes.  Please notify the Civil Service office in advance of the examination of any disability which may require special accommodation.  Anyone claiming Veterans' Preference must bring original DD 214 document.
