This is recreation work in developing individual weight training and fitness programs and supervising the weight room at Eileen Dailly Leisure Pool & Fitness Centre. The Fitness Centre Attendant is responsible for orienting clients to the weight/fitness areas and developing individual training programs; providing some specialized instruction or advice in a particular area of expertise; promoting interest and participation in fitness activities, and accepting and following up on clients' concerns regarding weight area issues; and ensuring for maintenance and safe and proper use of weight room equipment. An incumbent of this class also provides advice, guidance, and referral services to users relative to health and fitness options in the community as required. Duties are performed within established program guidelines, but considerable independence of action is exercised in day-to-day activities. Difficult or unusual problems are referred to a supervisor who reviews work performance in terms of the effectiveness of services rendered. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 and BC Recreation and Parks Association Fitness Theory and Weight Training, supplemented by courses in recreation, plus sound related experience including training/experience in the area of expertise or completion of a two year Community Recreation program from a recognized Community College, plus some related experience including training/experience in the area of expertise and related certifications; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Sound knowledge of the principles, practices and objectives of individual weight training and fitness programs and of the various types of weight training equipment; of applicable policies, regulations and rules governing the work performed; and of a specialized area within the industry such as sport-specific training, personal training, fitness appraisals or group fitness. Ability to determine individuals' fitness levels, develop individual weight training and fitness programs, and provide advice, guidance and referral services relative to health and fitness; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts and deal tactfully with a variety of clients. Skill in the operation of a variety of weight training equipment used in the programs. Ability to prepare and maintains records, activity reports and equipment maintenance records. Sound knowledge of applicable policies, regulations and rules governing the work performed. A First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Level C certifications are required. Schedule: 42 hours bi-weekly (0.60 FTE); Monday from 2:30 PM – 10:00 PM; Friday from 1:30 PM – 9:00PM; Saturday from 6:00 AM – 1:30 PM
