Description 

Excel Engineering is seeking a team-oriented, highly motivated Combustion Turbine Automation Engineer for our Client in Minnesota. We offer full service Engineering Consulting services in the US and abroad.

Excel Engineering is seeking a driven professional with hands-on experience in combustion turbine platforms and deep expertise in Emerson Ovation and GE Mark IV control systems. This role offers the opportunity to lead commissioning, upgrades, and system integration across complex generation assets, supporting safe energization, load control, and long-term reliability. Primary Responsibilities 

  • Lead automation system commissioning, upgrades, and troubleshooting for combustion turbine platforms 
  • Configure, validate, and optimize control logic on Emerson Ovation and GE Mark IV systems across turbine, generator, and balance-of-plant assets. 
  • Perform startup, tuning, and load testing of turbine automation systems, including overspeed protection, synchronization, and voltage regulation. 
  • Design and implement CT/PT circuits, breaker logic, and trip schemes for generator protection and switchgear integration. 
  • Support SCADA, RTU, and PLC integration for turbine and generator control systems, including legacy migrations and modernizations. 
  • Commission and calibrate Schweitzer SEL relays, GE Multilin devices, and Basler Automatic Voltage Regulators. 
  • Apply advanced knowledge of relay protection schemes, including sync-check relays, phase shift transformers, and Y-Accepter components. 
  • Configure and troubleshoot variable frequency drives (VFDs), lube oil systems, and air start systems for turbine support equipment. 
  • Review and interpret one-line diagrams, control wiring, and relay settings to ensure compliance with utility standards and safe energization. 
  • Lead instrumentation and controls demolition and retrofit efforts for Power Generation facilities. 
  • Lead loop checks, functional testing, and energization of new or modified equipment, including punch list development and turnover documentation. 
  • Translate client requirements into actionable scopes of work, coordinating with engineering/operations team to ensure delivery. 
  • Ensure compliance with industry codes, standards, and client specifications throughout all project phases.

Requirements

Education 

  • Bachelors or Masters’ Degree in: Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution. 
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher on a 4.0 Scale. 

Experience 

  • Minimum 6 years’ experience as an Automation Engineer in the Power Generation industry. 

Skills Applicable to the Role 

  • Emerson Ovation control system configuration, logic validation, and troubleshooting 
  • GE Mark IV turbine control system commissioning and upgrade support 
  • Schweitzer SEL relay programming 
  • PLC programming (Allen Bradley ControlLogix, Mitsubishi Diasys, GE Cimplicity) 
  • Proficiency in interpreting and redlining P&IDs, one-line diagrams, and control schematics. 
  • Familiarity with commissioning protocols, FAT/SAT procedures, and turnover documentation. 
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) 
  • Professional PE registration or ability to obtain such is preferred. 
  • Willingness to Travel up to 20%
