About the Department
Forsyth County Emergency Services Department is seeking experienced and hard working professionals to join our team as an EMS Captain.
An employee in this position serves in a frontline management position and competently supervises and coordinates the activities of various emergency medical services personnel on an assigned shift, in a training program or assigned to a special event or manages programs that have EMS division-wide impact for compliance, safety, logistics or quality management. The employee has the responsibility for ensuring that equipment is in working condition, that supplies on each vehicle are ample, that personnel are appropriately trained and qualified or certified. This employee is charged with maintaining positive working relationships with superiors and subordinates, possessing extensive knowledge of County and Departmental policies and procedures, interacting positively with both career and volunteer emergency services personnel, demonstrating an understanding of performance standards and capably evaluating employees’ performance, providing leadership and direction to subordinates while clearly communicating performance expectations and maintaining discipline and control among assigned personnel. Competently enacts disciplinary procedures. Effectively performs patient care at the paramedic level and works effectively under pressure of stress of emergency situations. Effectively and clearly communicates both verbally and in writing.
Overall physical demands:
Heavy—Lifting 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 25-50 lbs. frequently or up to 10-20 constantly.
Position Duties
Skills Needed:
- Considerable knowledge of equipment and supplies used in emergency care of patients and victims of accidents.
- Considerable knowledge of the geography of the county and location of the streets.
- Working knowledge of emergency medical care services.
- Skill in diagnosing a sick or injured person’s condition and applying emergency medical care.
- Ability to supervise and evaluate the work of others.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and supporting response agencies..

- Ability to meet patient and family psychosocial and physical needs to allay anxiety.
- Ability to ensure adherence to FCEMS SOG’s and standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing good communication skills (verbal, non-verbal and listening skills), developing interpersonal relationships and team building.
- Ability to work under stressful conditions and in difficult situations.
- Ability to be flexible and to work in a continually changing environment.
- Ability to lift an individual substantial weight (up to 240 lbs.) with the aid of another, onto a stretcher and into an ambulance.
- Ability to carry patients down stairs/upstairs using assorted stretchers.
- Ability to work while bending or leaning over a patient.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate's Degree with major in business administration, emergency medicine, education or related field with at least three years paramedic experience OR high school diploma/GED with at least five years paramedic experience.
Certifications:
EMT Paramedic certification required.
CPR ACLS and PALS provider certifications required.
PHTLS, BTLS, ITLS or an equivalent Trauma Management Course is required.
NIMS 100, 200, 700 and 800 required. NIMS 300 must be obtained within one year of hiring.
Substitutions:
- 14 hours of approved trauma training may substitute for ITLS, PHTLS, or TCCC
- 35 hours of cardiovascular training may substitute for ACLS, BLS
- 8 hours of pediatric cardiovascular training in substitute for PALS. EPC, or PEARS
Equivalent combination of education and experience considered.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a valid N.C. driver's license. Must possess NC Class B Operator’s License required within 1 year of hire.
Other Qualifications
- Directs the activities of subordinates including monitoring work assignments, communicating performance expectations, evaluating performance, scheduling personnel, maintaining discipline and control to ensure effective use of department human resources; and perform those supervisory activities required to ensure that the delivery of services and performance comply with departmental and County policies and procedures.
- Responds, as needed, to emergency calls in an ALS quick response vehicle performing necessary assessment, treatment and documenting interventions for all patients or serving in an incident command role or support role, as required, for management of emergency scenes including those involving multiple patients or complex rescues; assess, evaluate, and request resources needed during emergency operations.
- Ensures personnel safety and accountability, works with career and volunteer personnel alike in order to maintain seamless operations during emergency and non-emergency situations.
- Plan, research, develop, conduct, monitor and supervise training activities including new employee orientation, didactic classes, table-top exercises, psychomotor skill sessions, and tests; develops, administer and grade OEMS re-certification examination maintaining complete security for testing materials and related documents.
- Responsible for interfacing with external partners including other public safety agencies and franchise ambulance partners as well as other healthcare agencies including hospitals and public health partners in order to provide effective service to the community.
- Supervises and coordinates the activities of emergency medical services units during an assigned shift in the absence of the shift supervisor.
- Supervises the activities of an assigned Unit and is responsible for an assortment of Unit supplies and equipment.
- Makes daily emergency transportation, maintenance, and cleaning assignments as directed in the absence of the supervisor.
