Reports to: Program Principal
Qualifications:
Must possess a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred
Must possess a valid MA DESE License in Special Education, dual licensure in Physical Education preferred
A successful candidate will have experience working with students with social, emotional, behavioral, and learning disabilities
Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
Must have reliable transportation.
Job Summary:
The Adaptive Physical Education Teacher provides specialized physical education instruction and supports inclusion for students with disabilities. This role involves designing and implementing physical education programs/classes within both SEEM Collaborative programs and our member districts. Requires commuting between SEEM collaborative schools and member districts. Collaborating with special education and general education staff, and contributing to the development of IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) or 504 plans may also be required/. The goal is to promote physical fitness, motor skills, social engagement, and lifelong wellness for all students, regardless of ability.
Essential Duties:
- Assess students’ physical and motor abilities, strengths, limitations, and needs (e.g., strength, balance, coordination, mobility)
- Develop individualized or small-group adapted PE programs aligned with each student’s IEP or 504 plan goals
- Modify general physical education activities, equipment, rules, or environments to ensure accessibility and safety
- Provide direct instruction in adapted physical education and motor development
- Support inclusion by collaborating with general PE teachers, special educators, therapists (physical, occupational), and paraprofessionals as necessary
- Serve as a resource for staff, offering training or consultation on adaptations, accommodations, and safety as necessary
- Monitor, document, and report student progress; revise programs and goals as needed/requested
- Participate in IEP meetings, evaluations, and service planning sessions as requested
- Stay current with best practices and research in adaptive physical education, assistive technology, and inclusive practices
- Participate in professional development and training sessions as requested
- Communicate regularly with families, staff, and administration regarding student progress and needs
