Job Description

U. S. Steel is seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to expand our team as a Director of Government Affairs. This role will be responsible for leading and collaborating on advocacy efforts at both the federal and state government levels. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker, effective communicator, and possess the ability to build consensus to advance policy priorities.  A successful candidate will have a deep understanding of federal and/or state legislative and regulatory processes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement strategies to influence federal and state legislation and regulations that impact U.S. Steel.
  • Build and maintain relationships with federal and state legislators, government officials, and industry associations.
  • Monitor and analyze legislative and regulatory developments, and provide timely updates and recommendations to senior management.
  • Represent U.S. Steel in meetings with government officials, industry groups, and other stakeholders.
  • Coordinate and manage lobbying activities, including the preparation of position papers, testimony, and other advocacy materials.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure alignment of government affairs strategies with business objectives.
  • Manage external consultants and lobbyists to support U.S. Steel's government affairs initiatives.
  • Participate in industry coalitions and associations to advance U.S. Steel's policy priorities.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal and state lobbying disclosure and reporting requirements.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience working in a legislative role or in a government affairs, lobbying, or related field.
  • Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Law, or a related field. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of the legislative and regulatory process at the federal and/or state levels.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including the ability to work in a bipartisan manner.
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills.
  • Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and leading a team.
  • Experience in an industrial and manufacturing sector is a plus.
  • Specialized expertise in a policy area (i.e., environmental, tax, etc.) is a plus.
Travel
  • Estimated travel to corporate headquarters (Pittsburgh) or other operating states is 10-15%.
  • Preferred location: within commutable distance to Washington, DC.  Open to considering candidates in close proximity of our Pittsburgh, PA corporate headquarters or other major operating locations, including Arkansas, Indiana, Minnesota.
Salary Midpoint: $175,000 to $225,000/yr. This base salary range is a good faith estimate. Based on candidate skills/experience the final offer may be lower/higher.
