Position Summary
The Distribution System Operator is a high-level position in the line of progression for Sr. Distribution System Operator. This position is responsible for the monitoring, operating, and controlling of CoServ’s electric distribution system. The appropriate placement level for this position is based on skills which are assessed through the interview process. If selected, the hiring manager will determine placement.
Primary Position Responsibilities
- Optimizes the practices, policies, procedures and programs to operate the electric distribution system in a safe, reliable and efficient manner with the welfare of employees, members and the public in mind.
- Follows established operating practices and procedures as they relate to member restoration, switching and operating for scheduled and emergency work.
- Utilizes the outage management system to efficiently analyze, prioritize, and manage outages.
- Controls and operates devices connected to the distribution system, typically beginning with the substation circuit breaker.
- Monitors all aspects of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
- Dispatches employees for service-related issues.
- Prepares switching orders and activate on the map.
- Receives member calls related to electric service.
- Informs employees of abnormal system conditions, major outages and equipment related problems.
- Follows OSHA, NESC, CoServ specifications, safety procedures, and all federal, state and local standards.
- Complies with established CoServ safety and operating rules, procedures and guidelines including reporting unsafe practices to a supervisor.
- Complies with established CoServ Information Security Handbook, policies, procedures, and guidelines including reporting suspected information security incidents to Tech Support.
Secondary Position Responsibilities
- Attends regularly scheduled safety meetings.
- Attends CoServ University and industry training as required.
- Ability to work autonomously.
- Performs other duties and activities as directed.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Expected to take a leadership role in training the System Operators
Position Requirements
Education and Certifications Required
- High School Diploma or G.E.D equivalency.
Education and Certifications Preferred
- None
Experience Required
- Three (3) years of experience in System Operations or related field.
Experience Preferred
- Four (4) years of experience in the electric utility industry.
Skills and Abilities Required
- Ability to maintain detailed records.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written.
- Ability to build relationships with other departments, field crews and the public.
- Understanding of the company’s electric distribution systems and basic characteristics of electricity.
- Skills to utilize Microsoft Office.
- Strong analytical, numerical and reasoning abilities.
- Ability to prioritize and multi-task.
- Ability to work systematically to analyze problems and issues, identify causes, anticipate implications and identify effective courses of action.
- Ability to work extended hours during storms and/or other emergencies.
- Works within shift rotation which may include day, evening and night hours as well as weekends and company recognized holidays.

Physical Requirements
- Operates office equipment such as a computer, telephone, fax machine, copier, etc.
- Indoor, office environment.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds.
- Ability to drive occasionally as needed.
- Ability to sit for long periods of time.
- Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
Other Requirements
- Must reside within the CoServ operations residential boundary.
- Must have and maintain a valid Texas driver's license.
