Are you looking to make a meaningful impact on the community? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our Planning and Development team in the Building Division as a Tree Bylaw Technician. In this role you will find yourself performing specialized technical, inspectional, and regulatory office and field work with responsibility for reviewing proposed plans; conducting site inspections to ensure tree replacement; reviewing tree cutting permit applications and Arborist reports; approves or denies the application based on the Burnaby Tree Bylaw and accepted arboricultural techniques; reviewing tree retention plans; establishing requirements for tree replacement; and enforcing the provisions of the Burnaby Tree Bylaw. The incumbent recommends legal action when appropriate, gathers evidence, submits supporting documentation to supervisors or the City Solicitor, issues bylaw notices, attends court or adjudication hearings and acts as a witness as required; exercises considerable independence of judgment and action within established policies and procedures. Policy matters and the more contentious problems are discussed with a supervisor who reviews work performance in terms of technical adequacy, conformance to established policies and procedures and attainment of desired results. Performs related work as required.

Our ideal candidate will have completion of Grade 12 supplemented by related technical diploma, plus sound related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. You will have considerable knowledge of the Burnaby Tree Bylaw, current arboricultural principles, methods and practice and development and construction methods around trees, materials used, installation of trees, and of ornamental tree care techniques and practices. You will have the ability to determine status and value of existing trees in proposed development sites and to make recommendations concerning the retention of specific trees of value; to process and resolve complaints pertaining to tree bylaw infractions and violations and establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts and to interpret and explain applicable bylaws, regulations and related requirements to same. Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia, Certification as an Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture, and Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) with the International Society of Arboriculture are required.

Pay Rate: $40.74 per hour + 12% in lieu of benefits (2024 Rates)

Location: City Hall

Hours of work: This is an auxiliary position, hours and shifts are based on operational requirements and do not provide guaranteed hours of work, which may include on-call shifts. Typical shifts will be between Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
