About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Your Impact

As the Team Lead, Category Management, Sustaining Capital, you will play a pivotal role in supporting he Project Management Office for Lihir Operations. You will provide technical expertise and strategic procurement solutions for Capital Projects, ensuring all procurement activities are executed with precision, compliance, and value creation in mind.

 

You will deliver impact across three key areas:

  • Stable, Correct Process: Ensure procurement activities align with industry best practices, regulatory mandates, and internal policies.
  • Customer Service Focus: Partner with project managers and stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver responsive sourcing solutions.
  • Cost Improvements to Drive Value: Identify and implement opportunities for cost savings and continuous improvement across projects.

 

As part of our team, you will
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and expert advice across all aspects of Procurement, including strategy, negotiation, sourcing, contract management, and supplier relationships.
  • Plan and execute market sourcing activities (e.g. EOI, RFP, RFQ), lead regional category activities, managing spend to deliver best value outcomes.
  • Develop and implement fit-for-purpose approach-to-market strategies and procurement documentation.
  • Maintain strong supplier relationships and oversee the administration of Engineering and Construction panel contracts
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives and promote positive behavioural change in procurement practices.
  • Provide commercial support and advice to stakeholders on supplier performance, contractual matters, and value creation opportunities.
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings, efficiencies, and local business engagement in collaboration with the Social Performance team.
  • Build trusted relationships with key stakeholders and actively contribute as a team member across sourcing activities, projects, and contract portfolios.
  • Ensure contractors comply with mine safety standards and monitor adherence.
  • Maintain a detailed understanding of the capital project pipeline, supplier capabilities, PNG regulations, and market dynamics.
  • Travel to Lihir as required to provide on-site support, oversight, and foster strong working relationships with local stakeholders.

 

Prerequisites for your success in this role

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced professional who combines commercial acumen with strategic procurement expertise. You bring a track record of leadership and success in engineering and capital projects procurement, particularly within mining or heavy industry environments.


You will have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, Law, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
  • Professional certification, such as CIPS or CSCP, is highly desirable.Proven experience in commercial, management, or strategy roles, with proven success delivering capital procurement projects.
  • Strong knowledge of sourcing regulations, contract structures, legal frameworks, and supplier compliance requirements across local and international markets.
  • Demonstrated experience in contract management, tender processes, and procurement software systems including SAP, Ariba, and Power BI.
  • Expertise in low-cost country sourcing, international trade regulations, logistics, and the full Procure to Pay lifecycle.
  • Leadership experience in attracting, developing, and retaining high-performing teams, fostering collaboration, accountability, and results.
  • Proven negotiation skills and the ability to influence senior stakeholders and cross-functional teams to drive commercial outcomes.
  • Strong financial, analytical, and commercial acumen, with the ability to evaluate contracts, budgets, and opportunities for cost savings.
  • Technical capabilities including interpreting engineering designs and scopes (structural, mechanical, piping, civil), project management methodologies, and capital approval processes.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build relationships in remote or high-pressure environments.
  • A critical thinker and problem solver, highly self-motivated, with excellent attention to detail, time management, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.

 

Your work environment

Our Brisbane-based team enjoy flexible Monday to Friday work options to balance working from home and in the office. Our modern Fortitude Valley office is conveniently located near public transport and local cafés. Occasional travel to site operations and other interstate Newmont hubs may be required to support the broader team.

 

You will be embedded in a dynamic and collaborative team, working closely with Engineering, Project Management, and Procurement teams. Your role involves a mix of strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, and on-site support in a fast-paced operational setting.

Your Impact
