About the Role
The Director, Facilities Operations provides strategic leadership and hands-on oversight of all facility operations across assigned sites. This role is responsible for managing a multi-trade workforce engaged in operations, maintenance, custodial services, and security, while ensuring compliance with EH&S, OSHA, and WISHA standards. The Director will also oversee construction and capital improvement projects, driving operational excellence and a culture of safety, innovation, and accountability.

What You’ll Do Here

  • Develop and implement comprehensive Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) strategies that align with the organization’s mission, operational goals, and regulatory standards.

  • Lead, mentor, and empower the EH&S Manager and facilities team; foster professional growth, engagement, and high performance.

  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, proactively identifying and mitigating potential risks to maintain a safe and efficient work environment.

  • Cultivate a strong safety-first culture through proactive communication, training, and consistent leadership engagement at all organizational levels.

  • Ensure all contractors, vendors, and subcontractors adhere to company and industry safety standards.

  • Champion the use of emerging technologies and process improvements to enhance operational efficiency, safety, and sustainability.

  • Partner with key stakeholders across departments to integrate safety and operational best practices into all business functions.

  • Analyze performance metrics, identify trends, and deliver actionable insights and recommendations to executive leadership to drive continuous improvement.

  • Manages capital projects from inception through completion.

  • Plan, coordinate and monitor facility improvement and maintenance projects, develop scope of work, confer with departments and consultants; prepare construction plans and documents, budget reports, and authorization-related recommendations.

  • Develops and establishes policies and objectives to ensure efficient operation of individual operating units.

  • Provides technical leadership for the physical plant activities and programs, to include maintenance and construction, facilities management, security, warehouse, custodial services, and grounds and landscaping.

  • Responsible for assessment of subcontractors, major asset purchases and capital projects to ensure quality and regulatory compliance. Provide recommendations to executive management.

  • Oversees the activities of contract personnel, monitors and inspects work to ensure adherence to contract specifications and industry standards.

  • Develop building qualifications and ensures all renovation and new construction is properly documented to meet GXP building requirements.

  • Evaluates preventive maintenance contracts, maintenance programs and modifies these programs to increase efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Oversees the development of implementation for physical security, safety, and disaster recovery programs, procedures, and operations for the facility.

What You’ll Need to Succeed

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or a construction related field and/or equivalent experience. Training and experience maintenance in a regulated research environment preferred (e.g. GXP)

  • Minimum 5-7 years of progressive safety leadership experience, including 5+ years in a senior or managerial capacity. 

  • Proven leadership experience in facilities operations, EH&S management, or plant operations.

  • Strong knowledge of OSHA, WISHA regulations, risk management principles, and incident investigation techniques.

  • Demonstrated success in leading multi-disciplinary teams and managing capital projects.

  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

  • Commitment to fostering a safe, efficient, and sustainable workplace.

  • Ten (10) years’ experience in the performance of professional engineering work involving the design, construction, and permitting process of one million dollar plus for industrial building construction.

  • Five (5) plus years of supervisory experience and demonstrated knowledge and abilities related to the design and construction process.

  • Four (4) years’ experience in a regulated research environment.

  • The ability to solve complex problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables; the ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form; and the ability to demonstrate attention to detail.

  • Ability to negotiate high value construction contracts and maintenance agreements.

  • Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Office Suites.

What We Offer

The pay range estimated for this position is $125,000 to $200,000 per year.  Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, prior relevant experience, skills, education, certification, location as well as internal equity and market data.
