We are hiring a soccer correspondent based in the US to enhance our coverage of the US national and domestic teams (both men’s and women’s) and help bring our coverage of Premier League and European football to new audiences. These hires are part of a significant expansion of the Guardian’s coverage of soccer in and for the US. The ideal candidates will be hungry to produce great journalism in multiple formats, and have experience doing so.

Salary range: $99,000-$105,000
About the role
You will be responsible for supplying engaging soccer news, features and analysis for the Guardian, serving US and global audiences. The work will involve covering the US men’s and/or women’s national teams, Major League Soccer, the National Women’s Soccer League, and the global game for US audiences.
Key responsibilities and accountabilities
- Breaking exclusive soccer stories
- Writing reports, features, interviews and analysis
- Covering the run-up to the 2026 and 2027 World Cups and the politics around them
- Amplifying our global soccer coverage from Premier League and elsewhere, and occasionally contributing to it
- Addressing soccer obsessives and newcomers alike with authority, a strong voice, and entertaining, clean copy
- Build on your network of sources locally, nationally and globally to gain insights helping our readers understand the game and the forces that shape it
- Contributing to our podcasts, video and other multimedia coverage
- Helping the Guardian sports coverage reach new audiences
About you
- Ability to generate exclusive, off-diary news stories
- Excellent writing skills and ability to write match reports, color and reaction pieces on deadline
- Excellent news judgment and high standards for fair and accurate reporting
- Confidence in contributing to Guardian podcasts, video and events
- 3-6 years journalism experience
- Feature writing experience
- Understanding of social media and interest in reaching new audiences
- Excellent knowledge of US, Premier League and European soccer
- Strong understanding of the Guardian’s sport coverage
- Willingness to travel for matches and stories
- Willingness to work collaboratively with sports department colleagues in the US, UK and Australia, and with our data, pictures and social media teams.
- Non-English language proficiency is a plus (especially Spanish)
- Willingness to treat all kinds of soccer (men’s, women’s, domestic, European, etc) with equal respect, committing to the same level of journalistic standards and seriousness regardless of who is playing
- Expertise in using documents, data, and other journalistic tools to gain insight into soccer topics and the institutions relevant to them
- Ability to communicate succinctly and clearly in audio or video formats and on social platforms to amplify your written stories
