Role Overview

The Maintenance & Technician Services (MATS) Director oversees all aspects of District Works’ maintenance and field operations. This position leads crews, manages deployment, oversees equipment and fleet maintenance, ensures safety and compliance, and upholds District Works’ high service standards across all contracts.

The Director ensures that District Works delivers services with precision, reliability, and Radical Hospitality — keeping public spaces clean, safe, and well-maintained. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who thrives in both the field and the office, balancing operational oversight with strategic planning and real-time problem-solving.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years of progressive experience in maintenance, facilities management, or technician services.
  • 2+ years in a supervisory or management role overseeing field operations.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets, schedules, and performance metrics.
  • Strong understanding of OSHA standards, fleet management, and safety procedures.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks, Google Workspace, and workforce management systems.
  • Valid California Driver’s License with a clean DMV record.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
  • No unexplained employment gaps longer than six months.
  • Consistently punctual, reliable, and professional.

Preferred Qualifications

  • OSHA-10 or OSHA-30 certification (preferred, not required)
  • Knowledge of Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), Community Benefit Districts (CBDs), or public works
  • Experience with public infrastructure or transit environments

General Responsibilities

  • Provide backup support for other team members during absences.
  • Support other District Works programs as needed.
  • Maintain flexibility in scheduling to meet operational and client demands.

Program Operations

  • Hire, train, and oversee all staff assigned to the Maintenance & Technician Services program(s).
  • Develop and manage deployment plans to ensure efficient use of personnel and equipment.
  • Oversee scheduling, routing, and resource allocation through the District Works time and labor system.
  • Maintain accurate records of routes, inventory, and equipment for billing and reporting.
  • Conduct regular site inspections, performance audits, and quality control checks.
  • Manage program budgets, monitor expenses, and prepare monthly reports.
  • Respond promptly to service requests and work orders submitted through [email protected]
  • Prepare work estimates and service orders in QuickBooks when requested.
  • Ensure vehicles and equipment are properly maintained, serviced, and documented.
  • Collaborate with contractors and vendors to complete projects and resolve issues.

Employee Management

  • Provide strong leadership, coaching, and support to build a high-performing, safety-driven team.
  • Conduct regular safety meetings and enforce OSHA compliance.
  • Approve and monitor timecards weekly to ensure payroll accuracy and budget alignment.
  • Partner with HR on recruitment, onboarding, and performance management.
  • Conducted quarterly evaluations and implemented professional development plans.
    Address disciplinary issues promptly and uphold company standards.
  • Maintain compliance with all City, State, and Federal labor laws.

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary Range: $100,000 – $110,000 annually (commensurate with experience)
