Nursing Tutor position is a Part-Time, Grant-Funded position

The SUNY Corning College Nurse Education Program seeks a part-time Nursing Tutor to support students enrolled in the Associate Degree in Nursing (AND) program. The tutor will provide academic assistance, reinforce classroom and clinical concepts, and help students develop the skills needed for success in their coursework and on the NCLEX-RN examination.

Occasional meetings at different CCC locations and in the community may be required. Prolonged time sitting/standing working with computers and monitors, ability to walk/move across campus including walking up and down stairs, ability to lift up to 20 pounds (occasionally may be more), repeated motions may include keyboard typing. Typical office and indoor building environments, occasional outdoor activity may be required. Position Duties

Tutoring and Academic Support (70%) 

  • Provide one-one-one and small group tutoring sessions for AND students in core nursing subjects (e.g., fundamentals, pharmacology, medical-surgical nursing, maternal/child health, and mental health.)
  • Clarify complex nursing concepts and procedures to promote student understanding.
  • Provide tutoring services for nursing content on a drop-in and/or appointment basis at the Health Education Center and/or online, as necessary.
  • Assist students in developing effective study strategies, test-taking skills and clinical reasoning.
  • Review and clarify nursing concepts, assignments, and case studies to support mastery of course objectives.
  • USE NCLEX-style questions and practice scenarios to enhance student preparedness.
  • Support diverse learners by adapting tutoring methods to meet individual needs.
  • Maintain professional communication with faculty to align tutoring with program learning outcomes.
  • Encourage and mentor students to build confidence and professional competence.
  • Collaborate with faculty in developing review activities that will enhance student understanding of course material.
Skill Development (15%) 
  • Assist students in developing effective study techniques, test-taking strategies, and critical thinking skills.
  • Provide practice using NCLEX-style questions and case-based learning scenarios.
Student Engagement (5%) 
  • Encourage student participation and foster a supportive learning environment.
  • Adapt tutoring methods to meet the needs of diverse learners with varying academic backgrounds.
Collaboration and Miscellaneous (10%) 
  • Communicate with nursing faculty and Nursing Learning Specialist to align tutoring services with program outcomes.
  • Provide feedback on common areas of student difficulty to inform instructional strategies.
  • Maintain current and accurate records of tutorial activities and submit required documentation to Nurse Educational Specialist in a timely manner.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to provide effective individual and group assistance.
  • Ability to maximize the learning opportunities for each student
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff.
  • Ability to use electronic learning platforms for dissemination of materials.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Some tutoring experience helpful but not required.
  • Demonstrates commitment to accomplishing work in an ethical, efficient, and cost-effective manner
  • Ability to effectively convey information verbally and in writing, demonstrate effective listening skills, and display respect for and openness to other people’s ideas and thoughts
  • Ability to accept changes to job requirements, policies, workload, etc., as well as learn new methods, procedures, or techniques resulting from change with the ability to clearly approach problems and find solutions
  • Demonstrates support for the College’s goal of becoming a more diverse, inclusive, and culturally aware community and practicing anti-racist/biased behaviors

Other Qualifications

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing.
  • Completion of an Associate Degree in Nursing (AND) required. Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or actively pursuing.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of clinical nursing experience.
  • Prior teaching, tutoring, or precepting experience.
  • Current knowledge of nursing practice for the pre-licensure RN student.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office; experience with or ability to learn educational technology.

    Preferred Qualification
  • Bachelor’s Degree (BSN) or higher preferred
  • Teaching experience in School of Nursing or staff development is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Brightspace or a similar learning management system, (LMS) is recommended.
