O/T - Interpreter (LMS) presso Caroline County Public Schools

JOB SUMMARY:  The interpreter functioning as a communication specialist facilitates and transfers information between the Spanish speaking student and the classroom teacher as well as other individuals including peers, classmates, and other adults in the school setting.  Essentially the position covers the same responsibilities as an instructional assistant but includes the additional requirement of interpretting the Spanish language.

Interpreters supplement the services of professionally trained teachers, and by doing so, enable the teachers to give more of their time and attention to the parts of the teaching-learning act that require professional knowledge and skills.  Interpreters are under the direct supervision of the teacher with whom they are assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or GED.
• Has been trained and demonstrated competency as an interpreter in Spanish.
• Good interpersonal communication skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Reinforces instructions introduced by the teacher when working with individuals and small groups.
• Prepares educational materials as directed by the teacher.  This includes operating duplicating, audio-visual, and other instructional equipment.
• Assists in supervising students in non-instructional settings that may include the hallways, playground, and bus arrival and departure areas.
• Assists pupils with personal hygiene.
• Provides custodial care to students whose disability prevents them from completing or even attempting activities of daily living.
• Assists and sometimes provides for the mobility of impaired students.  This includes the physical lifting of students.
• Assists in implementation of behavior management programs that may include the physical movement and/or restraint of students.
• Participates in the movement of students during crisis situations such as fire drill, civil defense drills, medical and behavioral emergencies, etc.
• Performs general classroom housekeeping in accordance with county safety procedures.
• Participates in school and county workshops as directed.
• Assists the student in the operation of instructional technology adaptation equipment.
• Maintains regular, on-time attendance.
• All essential duties are performed in the capacity as an interpreter for students who are deal or have a hearing impairment.
• Reacts to change productively and performs other duties as assigned.

PAY & HOURS:  This position is a Occasional Temporary position with 25 hours per week.  It is hourly and as-need basis for interpretation services.
