- Arranges for transportation of all children when required by their IEPs for the purpose of ensuring compliance with state and federal mandates.
- Collaborates with general education leaders for the purpose of assisting children in the least restrictive environment and contributing to the development of total school programs to prevent the need for referral to special education.
- Compiling and maintaining all reports, files, records and other documents for the purpose of ensuring compliance with legal requirements and providing documentation for administrative matters.
- Develops and establishes procedures for the purpose of identification, referral, placement, evaluation, multidisciplinary conferencing and individual education planning appropriate for each child eligible for special education services.
- Directs and manages department operations; program components, the maintenance of services and the implementation of new programs and/or processes (e.g. All OCR and State mediation complaints, inventory of equipment purchased for special education, etc.) for the purpose of providing services within established timeframes and in compliance with related requirements.
- Establishes procedures for a variety for fiscal processes for the purpose of requisitioning, ordering and paying for special education equipment and supplies.
- Facilitates meetings, workshops, seminars, etc. (e.g. OCR and state mediation complaints, district liaison, special education parent groups, etc.) for the purpose of identifying issues, developing recommendations, supporting other staff, and serving as a District representative.
- Implements assigned programs and/or projects (e.g. improvements for all district instructional programs, intervention programs to supplement regular classroom instruction for all students, including those with learning or visual disabilities, etc.) for the purpose of conforming to district and state curriculum and/or instructional objectives.
- Monitors budget allocations, expenditures, fund balances and related financial activities for the purpose of ensuring that allocations are accurate, revenues are recorded, expenses are within budget limits and/or fiscal practices are followed.
- Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars (e.g. Governing Board, public, external and internal agencies, professional development, hearings, IEPs, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
- Performs personnel functions (e.g. recruitment, interviewing, selection, hiring, evaluating, supervising, disciplining, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing, enhancing productivity of personnel and achieving objectives within budget.
- Prepares a wide variety of often complex materials (e.g. plans, budgets, funding requests, Board presentation, long and short range plans, reports, analyses, recommendations, fiscal procedures, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and issues, meeting compliance requirements, providing audit references, making presentations, and/or providing supporting materials for requested actions.
- Presents information to a variety of internal and external sources (e.g. budget overviews, accounting processes, distribution formulas, interpretation of objectives and programs, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information, gaining feedback and ensuring adherence to established internal controls.
- Recommends designs, furnishings, equipment and location of new special education facilities, etc. for the purpose of addressing the essential needs of exceptional children.
- Researches a variety of topics (e.g. relevant policies, new federal and state statutes, staffing requirements, financial resources, etc.) for the purpose of developing new programs/services, keeping current with literature and new research findings, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, securing general information and/or responding to requests.
- Responds to issues involving staff, conflicts in policies and regulations, community concerns, parental requests that may result in some negative impact and/or liability if not appropriately addressed for the purpose of identifying the relevant issues and recommending or implementing a plan of action that will efficiently resolve the issue.
- Serves as a resource to others for the purpose of explaining procedures conveying and/or receiving information as needed for the planning, developing and evaluating of services.
- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Purpose Statement
The job of Director - Exceptional Student Services is done for the purpose/s of directing special education programs and services; providing information and serving as a resource to others; achieving defined objectives by planning, evaluating, developing, implementing and maintaining services in compliance with state and federal mandates regarding special and exceptional student education; and serving as a member of the leadership team.
This job reports to the Associate Superintendent of Academic Support Services
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including using a variety of software applications; planning and managing projects; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Working Environment

Experience Job related experience within a specialized field with increasing levels of responsibility is required.
Education Masters degree in job-related area.
