Position Title: Valparaiso High School Auditorium Director (.5 Position)
Position Available: .5 (Split Position) The Auditorium Director position is a stipend position as per the Valparaiso Teacher Master Contract. This position has been handled by two faculty members splitting the stipend in half with each collaborating in the responsibilities of the position listed below.
Qualifications:
VHS Staff member preferred
Auditorium equipment knowledge preferred
Availability nights and weekends (event dependent)
Knowledge and experience in Technical Theatre (best practices in stagecraft, lighting and sound design, and fly system operations)
Primary Responsibilities include:
Lead all technical and operational knowledge of lighting and sound systems in a large auditorium setting. Provide technical work in operating these systems.
Provide audio visual technical operation for auditorium events when necessary.
Collaborate with the drama director for planning set, lights, and sound for fall show.
Lead set build days for the fall show (generally 3-6 Saturdays). Supervise students and instruct them on proper use of power tools and best practices of stagecraft.
Create lighting design and set up for fall show, and supervise students in running the lighting board during fall show and mocha madness for drama club, including performances, tech week, and the last week of rehearsals before tech week.
Set up all sound systems and microphones, including the orchestra pit, for fall play or musical. Supervise students in running the sound board during fall show, including performances, tech week, and the last week of rehearsals before tech week.
Direct students for strike at the end of the fall show, including all booth equipment, set tear down, and reorganization of storage spaces.
Maintain organized storage in scene shop, as well as props and costumes.
Keep up to date on training and best safety practices for operating the counterbalanced fly system, including training students for use during fall show when needed.
Lead the training of students, staff, and volunteers during scheduled auditorium events is a component of the position.
Coordinate the assignment, scheduling, and training of student production personnel.
As Needed Responsibilities (with additional sponsor):
Coordinates the scheduling and preparation of auditorium facilities for scheduled VHS, VCS, school events requests, and/or other community events.
Be present for all activities using the auditorium outside of the school house hours by VCS schools, community organizations, and rentals of the auditorium as necessary.
Assist in preparing and providing facility preparation, schedule, and assist with various equipment availability needs for scheduled events.
Have knowledge of auditorium usage requests by organizations with different a variety of needs that include but it is not limited to music, dance, drama, speaking, presentation, and school hour events.
Assist in coordinating with the parties involved in scheduled events to facilitate and coordinate their requests and needs.
Work in collaboration with the Valparaiso Community Schools Maintenance Department to supervise and oversee the maintenance and upkeep of the auditorium equipment, house furniture, and other aspects of a large auditorium.
Communicates and coordinates with the VHS IT Department when necessary.
Be present and assist at rehearsals, performances and other auditorium events as necessary.
Provide facility preparation, schedule and provide maintenance of auditorium facility and equipment, and assist with various equipment availability for scheduled events.
Supervise areas adjacent to the auditorium when used as part of an auditorium scheduled event such as hallways, dressing rooms, classrooms (band, choir, orchestra rooms), bathrooms, cafeteria.
Perform special projects and assignments as directed.
Communicates and coordinates with VHS Music faculty on Music Department performance needs for concerts (band. choir, orchestra).
Works with the technical director/set coordinator for orchestra pit needs.
Works with the fall musical director for instrumentation needs for pit orchestra (when required).
Set acoustical shells on stage when necessary. Remove acoustical shells off stage when required.
- Maintains communication with the VHS Custodial staff for the upkeep of the facility and surrounding areas prior and following events.
