Job Summary
The Executive Director of Risk Advisory & Insurance Services (RAIS) is the senior-most risk leader responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing a comprehensive, enterprise-wide risk management and insurance strategy across the consolidated UCSF enterprise. Excluding Professional Medical and Hospital Liability and Workers’ Compensation, this position commands oversight of UCSF risk programs across diverse environments, including primary and satellite campuses and medical facilities located in San Francisco, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital - Oakland, UCSF Fresno, other regional sites and international operations.
This is a highly visible, mission-critical leadership role that requires deep experience in strategic risk management, exceptional executive advising skills, and the ability to influence culture and policy across complex organizations. The Executive Director will serve as a trusted thought partner to UCSF’s most senior leaders, contributing to the institution’s resilience and long-term success.
The Executive Director serves as UCSF’s chief risk strategist and a key advisor to the Chancellor, Executive Vice Chancellor, Deans, Chairs, UCSF Health leadership, and UC Office of the President. In this capacity, the Executive Director:
- Shapes institutional risk tolerance and advises on critical matters with significant operational, reputational, and financial impact.
- Builds consensus among diverse senior stakeholders and influences institutional direction on high-stakes risk decisions.
- Provides expert guidance on emerging risks including those related to international operations, large-scale construction projects, and clinical research.
- Acts as a trusted voice and strategic partner in times of crisis, sensitive investigations, or potential liability exposure.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $118,300 - $268,900 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related area (business, humanities, public service, etc.) and 10-15 years relevant experience and/or equivalent education/experience.
- Extensive experience leading enterprise-wide risk management programs at a strategic level, with the ability to anticipate, identify, and mitigate both insurable and non-insurable risks across a complex organization.
- Demonstrated success in leading and developing high-performing, consultative teams with a focus on education, stakeholder engagement, and continuous improvement in risk practices.
- Superior communication, negotiation, and persuasion skills to engage, influence, and advise senior executives, faculty leaders, and governing bodies in high-stakes, often controversial, decision-making.
- Proven executive-level capability to lead resolution of sensitive, high-risk situations—especially in research and healthcare settings—through sound judgment, collaboration, and innovation.
- Knowledge of the emerging risks, ethical considerations, and regulatory frameworks related to the use of artificial intelligence in academic, clinical, and administrative environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree preferred.
- Associate in Risk Management (professional certification)
- Deep subject matter expertise in clinical research, contractual risk transfer, litigation oversight, and global security, with the ability to integrate diverse risk areas into a coherent executive strategy.
- Ability to evaluate and integrate AI technologies into risk management strategies, including leveraging machine learning and predictive analytics to enhance risk identification, mitigation, and operational efficiency.
- Thorough knowledge of UCOP and UCSF policies and risk and insurance programs.
- Track record of effective participation in executive committees, systemwide panels, and leadership searches, with the ability to represent risk priorities in institutional governance and policy development.
