Role Summary

The EHS Specialist will serve as a resource for ensuring safe practices and as a role model for safety, enforcing safety policies and SOP’s, coordinating annual hearing test, mask fittings, formalin and ethylene oxide testing, and bi-annual TB testing. The EHS Specialist will help facilitate safety-related training. The EHS Specialist will help facilitate injury investigations and take part in the implementation of corrective actions. The EHS Specialist will support the teams in identifying hazards through assisting with Job Hazard Analysis and monthly safety audits.

 

Role Responsibilities

  • Support all safety initiatives for three facility locations.
  • Collaborate with Supervisors to facilitate safety-related training for all staff and visitors.
  • Enforce safety policies, SOP’s, and procedures to ensure compliance at all facilities.
  • Work with Safety Program Manager to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Perform weekly, monthly safety audits.
  • Maintain first aid kits, AED’s, eyewash stations, and fire extinguishers.
  • Assist Safety Program Manager with chemical and biowaste removal.
  • Facilitate biannual TB screening, annual hearing test, mask fitting, Formalin and Ethylene Oxide air sampling.
  • Enforce safety related policies and procedures.
  • Help facilitate injury investigations for all injuries and support corrective actions to mitigate future incidents.
  • Assist with periodic review of safety policies and procedures.
  • Engage in professional development to ensure up to date knowledge in covered safety related areas.
  •  Other duties as assigned

 

Role Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in health, Safety, and Environment or equivalent.
  • 1-2 years’ experience in a safety related role.
  • Strong understanding of MIOASH / OSHA regulations
  • Strong understanding of AAALAC guidelines preferred.
  • Experience in a lab or medical environment preferred.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local radiation safety regulations, and protocols and/or procedures
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office core applications and the ability to learn and use additional applications.
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
  • Ability to develop training material for safety related subjects.
  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-term goals

Special Requirements

  • The person filling this position will spend time in an office setting and in a laboratory setting.
  • There will be exposure to animal pathogens and chemicals.
  • Ability to don and wear personal protective gear, including N95 masks and respirators.
  • Ability to ascend/descend ladders and stairs.
  • Ability to spend much of the day standing and/or walking.
  • Physical activity including lifting (up to 50lbs), carrying (up to 40lbs for up to fifty feet), pushing/pulling (up to 75lbs force), reaching, gripping/pinching, standing without restriction.
  • Ability to work beyond typical work schedule including but not limited to evenings, weekends, extended shifts with short notice.
