Position Details

The Part & Prep Technician plays a critical role in preparing, maintaining, and managing molds, tooling, and associated parts used in boat production. The technician ensures molds are ready for gel coat, stays on schedule, performs repairs, and supports the movement and staging of molds throughout the facility (including via forklift). This is a hands-on, physically demanding role in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Prepare mold surfaces for gel coat application, including cleaning, sanding, buffing, waxing, applying release agents, and masking.
  • Remove residual gel coat, wax, or mold releases from molds between pulls.
  • Inspect molds for wear, damage, or defects; perform repair, patching, or touch-up as needed (e.g. filling pits, repairing edges, fairing surfaces).
  • Maintain mold alignment, tolerances, and surface finish; monitor mold condition and flag issues to tooling or engineering teams.
  • Assist in mold setup and teardown during changeovers; ensure molds are ready at the correct time to meet production schedules.
  • Transport molds, mold components, plugs, and tooling between workstations or to storage using lift equipment (e.g. forklift, crane, cart).
  • Stage molds, tooling, and parts to support downstream operations (lamination, gel coat, finishing).
  • Maintain tooling and fixture organization, cleanliness, and 5S standards in the mold prep area.
  • Maintain accurate logs and records (e.g. mold usage, repair history, schedule status).
  • Collaborate with production planning, composites, quality, and maintenance to resolve mold-related issues, schedule conflicts, or quality defects.
  • Operate hand and power tools (e.g. grinders, sanders, buffers, drills, saws, air tools) safely and effectively.
  • Adhere to all safety, environmental, and PPE requirements when working with resins, solvents, composites, and chemicals.
  • Perform general housekeeping, chemical handling, waste disposal, and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Occasionally assist with other tooling or composite tasks as needed per management direction.

Qualifications

Required / Preferred Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Prior experience working with molds, composites, fiberglass, or tooling preferred.
  • Previous experience in boat or marine manufacturing is a plus.

Technical / Functional Skills

  • Knowledge of gel coat, mold release systems, mold waxing techniques, and composite surfaces.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic technical drawings, tooling schematics, and job instructions.
  • Competence with hand tools, power tools, grinders, sanders, drills, buffers, etc.
  • Forklift certification and experience operating lift equipment (forklift, overhead crane) preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail, especially for surface finish and mold integrity.
  • Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills to identify defects or anomalies in molds and tooling.
  • Ability to manage time, prioritize tasks, and coordinate mold schedules under production pressures.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to work collaboratively across teams.

Physical & Working Conditions

  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and maneuver objects up to 50 lbs (or higher, depending on mold weights).
  • Ability to stand, kneel, bend, stoop, climb ladders, and reach overhead for extended periods.
  • Work in indoor/outdoor conditions; ambient temperature variation, humidity, noise, dust, fumes, or chemical exposure.
  • Must be comfortable wearing PPE (respirators, gloves, eye protection) and following safety protocols.
  • Ability to work overtime or weekend shifts as needed to meet production goals.

•     Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements include eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, protective suits, dusts masks and respirators.

•     Employees must be able to work a 10-hour shift or more in one work day including planned and unplanned overtime.

•     Exhibits ability to work cautiously but efficiently in potentially hazardous conditions
