Under the direction and supervision of the Lucas County Child Support Enforcement Supervisor or designee; the Legal Secretary is responsible for but not limited to the preparation of advance-level correspondence (i.e., documents which require a great deal of understanding of technical or legal language and applications, e.g., legal briefs, affidavits) independently with strict time pressures. This work involves the prioritization of assignments by the Legal Secretary and in addition the incumbent is responsible for performing various clerical assignments.
Responsibilities
- Prepares advanced-level correspondence (i.e. documents which require a great deal of understanding of technical and legal language and applications) (e.g. legal briefs, affidavits) independently with strict time pressures, and assists lower-level clerical worker with the preparation of correspondence, according to standard operating procedures and instructions.
- Operates both low level (memory typewriter) and high level (full word processing, data entry and mathematical computations, indexing, and sorting of data) word processing equipment to produce basic and technical material.
- Operates word processing equipment to produce high quality technical material, reports, or other documents.
- Prepares typing, filing, copying and transcription from dictating equipment or from oral instruction.
- Performs more detailed assignments, both in typing and clerical area with little supervision.
- Provides additional clerical support as needed and prepares intermediate and basic correspondence.
- Ability to carry out instructions without close supervision. Copy material accurately and recognize grammatical and spelling errors.
- Answer phone call inquiries of a general and more detailed nature from the general public. Can either route the call to the appropriate person or department.
- Performs related clerical duties such as photocopying, proofread final material for accuracy and completeness, maintains record of complete work or logs and sorts and prioritizes incoming work.
- Sends and receives outgoing and incoming mail for the department.
- Ability to work alone on most tasks and perform under stress or pressure to meet deadlines.
- Assist in training of staff members on Word Processing equipment.
- Works closely with legal staff in the preparation of legal documents.
- Perform any miscellaneous duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.
- Be familiar with CSEM as it relates to job responsibilities and corresponding job functions.
Knowledge of:
Agency filing and records system; Computer operations (e.g., CRIS-E, SETS, Group Wise, Word Perfect, Paradox and other related software on the State computer system); Data entry/data bases; English grammar and composition; Mail procedures ( i.e., distribution within the department, sending and receiving); Office practices and procedures; Office equipment (e.g., fax, photocopier, typewriter, dictaphone); Telephone system; Transcription; Typing principles.
Skilled in:

Qualifications
An associates degree in the legal secretarial sciences field or two (2) years previous employment with a law firm/governmental office in a legal secretarial position.
Type fifty‑five (55) words per minute corrected.
