The City of Tacoma is currently recruiting for a highly motivated, energetic, qualified candidate to serve as a Computer Support Technician - Intern.
 
 This internship is a part-time, temporary (up to six-months) position. As an intern, you will work closely with a Computer Support Technician to experience and learn duties such as:

  • Install and configure physical desktops, laptops, tablets, and peripherals via a variety of methods such as in person, over the phone, or via remote control
  • Work with Client Technology Support Services staff and management to ensure the services delivered meet the needs of the City and are in line with departmental and City standards
  • Participate in IT projects; coordinate with IT management and Client Technology Support Services   staff to assist in PC replacement activities; participate in Incident, Change, Request and Asset Management as part of overall IT Service Delivery
  • Assist the Service Desk in reviewing and processing tickets submitted through a self-service portal, via emails, or by phone from City employees reporting IT service disruptions or requesting IT services; log all relevant incident/service request details, allocating categorization and prioritization codes into the current IT Service Management tool; resolving issues at first point-of-contact when possible. The Intern will also be responsible for tasks such as password resets, creating network accounts, Active Directory maintenance, and inventory control.

IT Asset Management:

  • Tracks updates and verifies accuracy of asset inventory in the designated IT asset management tool; includes but not limited to desktops, laptops, workstations, tablets, servers, associated peripherals and department owned software
  • Coordinates with Tacoma Public Utilities divisions during PC counts for Microsoft enterprise renewals and network charges
  • Assists with surplus of retired IT equipment


 This position is ideal for someone who is pursuing a career in Information Technology and wants to experience what it is like to support government departments and employees in a fast-paced, ever-changing work environment, who is committed to providing excellent customer service, works well individually, and as a team member in completing a variety of assignments.


Position Duties

An equivalent combination to: graduation from high school or GED. Typically the applicant should be enrolled in college or study programs related to information technology, or possess equivalent experience.

Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be able to provide excellent customer service, as well as a willingness to learn the following skills:

  • Troubleshooting/diagnosis, cleaning, and minor repair of computers, peripheral equipment
  • Basic principles of computer technology
  • Follow procedures and corrective actions to take during troubleshooting
  • Use of IT Service Management tools
  • Record-keeping techniques
  • Cooperate as team in a Service Desk environment
  • Successfully work together in a cross-functional team dynamic
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
  • Read and interpret computer processing instructions and other detailed and precisely written and oral operating instructions
  • Operate computers and peripheral equipment
  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action
  • Meet schedules and timelines
  • Maintain records and prepare reports
  • Lift boxes of paper and computer equipment up to 40lbs
