Overview:

Under the direction of the Pathology Lab Manager, the Pathology Grossing Technician is responsible for the accuracy of pathology services requiring specialized techniques. Responsible for accurate gross description of patient specimens, inputting gross description into LIS software, ensuring that specimens are loaded into the tissue processors and processors are programmed correctly on a nightly basis, and tracking the number of specimens, along with other associated duties in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulations. 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Assure appropriate specimen identification and accessioning 
  • In association with the pathologist(s), describe gross anatomic features: describe the overall specimen dimensions, structures, size, and appearance. Dissect surgical specimens and prepare tissues for processing according to established procedures. 
  • Exercises judgment by preserving samples for testing. 
  • Prepare gross tissue sections for frozen section and electron and immunofluorescent microscopy. 
  • Photograph of pertinent specimens. 
  • Assure proper maintenance of equipment, provision of adequate supplies, and cleanliness of the surgical pathology suite. 
  • Maintains quality control/assurance activities and records. 
  • Process test requests with accompanying specimens and enter orders as required. Use established policies and procedures for specimen acceptability and troubleshoot or clarify questions regarding specimen integrity. 
  • Process specimen by placing on instrument, giving to technologist, or placing in appropriate storage area. 
  • Prepare and return blood components and tissues following patient and product identification procedures. 
  • Practice universal safety precautions  
  • Perform gross description of patient specimens according to the policy and procedure manual, including quality control checks, accurate measurement of specimens and visible lesions, cutting tissue to appropriately sized pieces, loading in cassette, and processing on the correct cycle.   
  • Maintain records of the total number of specimens on a daily basis in order to communicate workflow to other shifts and equipment maintenance to be accurately performed. 
  • Ensure that equipment and workstations are kept clean and regularly disinfected according to the policy and procedure manual.  
  • Dispose spent formalin into the appropriate waste container and refill specimen holding containers as needed to ensure proper fixation of tissue.  
  • Maintain saved specimens (RSS cases) for the appropriate amount of time and dispose of them per protocol 
  • Maintain daily specimen bottles in labeled/dated containers and appropriately dispose of them in the appropriate biohazard container.   
  • Effectively communicate issues with specimens received to the appropriate people (supervisor, manager, lab director)  
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor or manager such as equipment maintenance, inventory of supplies, putting away supplies, pack up and weigh full biohazard boxes, create new empty biohazard boxes, etc.  
Qualifications:

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of an Associate’s/Bachelor’s degree in science or related field 
  • Meets all requirements as outlined in the CLIA required personnel qualifications for high complexity testing.    

Preferred 

  • ASCP HT/HTL registered/eligible or equivalent training program, if applicable.  
  • Working knowledge of OSHA standards and laboratory policies and procedures.  
  • At least one year of experience grossing in a clinical pathology lab/and or similar setting.
