SUMMARY: Works with the Recreation Facilities Manager to successfully maintain, plan, and implement professional recreation services and programs in accordance with the mission and stated goals of the department. This supervisory role requires strong leadership qualities, good communication skills, excellent customer service skills, and strong organizational skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting relationships, work assignments, and work schedules may be subject to change to meet City needs or operational requirements. Punctual attendance at work and the ability to work well with the public, supervisors, and co-workers and the ability to think critically to design, plan and implement parks and recreation programs/systems are essential elements of this position. Other duties may be assigned.
Facility, Program and Staff Management:
Supervises the Recreation Services Representative, responsible for the operation, programming, and administration of all wellness and fitness areas and programming at the Adult Recreation Center.
Supervises the Recreation Services Representative, responsible for the Activity Pool and aquatics operations at the Adult Recreation Center.
Supervises the Recreation Services Representative, responsible for the Front Desk at the Adult Recreation Center.
Performs supervisory functions by interviewing, selecting, training, developing, evaluating, disciplining, and terminating staff; providing staff with the resources, equipment, tools and knowledge necessary to perform and improve services; and guides employees’ work efforts in being successful, creating and resourceful within their decision-making responsibilities.
Evaluates effectiveness of recreation areas, facilities, and services.
Assists in ensuring the Bentonville Adult Recreation Center and surrounding grounds remains a safe, clean environment for the public to utilize for recreational activities.
Program and Event Coordination:
Organizes and executes programming at the Bentonville Adult Recreation Center.
Provides program and event management, customer service, communication and distribute department marketing to the public.
Develops and introduces new recreation programs activities, equipment, and materials to management.
Evaluates the effectiveness of recreation areas, facilities, and services.
Organizes and executes key components of the Run Bentonville Half Marathon.
Works with administrative or other professional personnel, such as those engaged in medicine, social work, nursing, psychology, and therapy, to ensure that recreation is well balanced, coordinated, and integrated with special services.
Acquires sponsorships, donations and/or other in-kind services as needed for the organization and implementation of recreation programs.
Develops and maintains relations with other recreation providers in community.
Revenue/Expense Budget Management:
Assists in management of a budget of several hundred thousand dollars in expenses and revenue.
Participates in the development and monitoring of recreation program budgets; tracks expenses and revenues generated by the programs; tracks daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly participation figures; implement corrective measures as needed, and report status on a regular basis; make recommendations for capital improvements and equipment.
Studies local conditions and develops immediate and long-range plans to meet recreational needs of all age groups.
Enters purchase orders and executes purchases of equipment and supplies.
Tracks expenses and revenues generated by the programs and facilities.
Implements corrective measures as needed and reports status regularly.
Makes recommendations for capital improvements and equipment.
Customer Service, Communication, Professional Development:
Provide exceptional customer service and communication to members and the public with emphasis on serving the active adult community.
Ensure the facility and surrounding grounds are safe, clean, and suitable for recreational activities.
Distribute department marketing materials to the public.
Fosters the cooperation and teamwork of city recreation and non-recreation personnel.
Participate in professional associations, conferences, workshops, and training to stay current with industry trends.
Participates in professional associations, conferences, workshops, training, and recreation.
Establishes and maintains contact with recreation service and equipment vendors.
Adapts city-sponsored recreation programs to meet needs of citizens, groups, teams, and individuals.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position directly supervises three full-time staff members and 10-15 part-time staff members. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree (B. A.) in Park and Recreation Administration or closely related field and up to two years’ related experience and/or training in Parks and Recreation management, experience with active adults, including supervisory experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistics and the ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Must also have the ability to perform basic budget management.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license, the ability to become certified in CPR and First Aid and must pass a background security check.
