About the Department
Catawba County Public Health is seeking a Public Health School Nurse to join our dedicated School Health Team. In this role, you will provide nursing services at assigned schools throughout Catawba County, supporting students from kindergarten through high school. School Nurses play a crucial role in promoting student health, managing chronic conditions, providing health education, and serving as the primary contact for health-related needs within the school setting. Employees in permanent 90% school nurse roles work 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday, during the school year, with time taken off on some non-school days, vacation days, and the students’ summer break. The expected hiring range is $57,269.20 - $71,586.50 annually ($30.60 – $38.25 per hour).

Position Duties
- Provide high-quality nursing services in assigned schools
- Develop and implement nursing care plans for students with chronic conditions or medical needs
- Coordinate health screenings and follow-up care
- Conduct communicable disease control and health education programs
- Serve as a liaison among students, families, school staff, and community providers
- Participate in school and community health initiatives, including wellness committees
- Maintain timely documentation and compliance with state immunization and health assessment requirements
- Provide clinic coverage and participate in emergency preparedness and public health outreach as needed
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Nursing from an accredited institution and 1 year of professional nursing experience
- Must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the NC Board of Nursing
Other Qualifications
- Candidates without a BSN degree must be committed to obtaining the degree within a specified time upon employment
- Must maintain CPR certification annually
- Obtain School Nurse Certification within 3 years of hire
- Register and complete the North Carolina credentialed Public Health Nurse course
- Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record (Driving is an essential function of this position)
- Experience working with school-aged children (ages 5–18)
- Strong communication, critical thinking, and organizational skills
- Comfort with public speaking and presenting health education
- Flexibility and the ability to work independently in a school-based setting
- Familiarity with community health resources and public health programs
- This position is considered Medium Work, requiring the ability to lift up to 50 pounds as well as the ability to carry, pull, and push up to 50 pounds.
