THE DEPARTMENT:
The Engineering & Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining the City's public assets, including all infrastructure, right of way, parks, facilities and the City’s vehicle and equipment fleet. The Engineering Division oversees the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP), Storm Water & Environmental Compliance, Traffic Safety, and Engineering Permits, Plan Checks and Inspections for private development.  The Public Works operations team provides essential services for the community through its four Divisions: Streets & Wastewater Maintenance, Parks Maintenance,  Facilities Maintenance, and Fleet & Equipment Maintenance.

THE JOB:

Under general supervision, to perform skilled and other work in traffic directional painting; fabricate traffic regulatory signs; install and maintain signs and sign posts; and perform related duties as required. 

This position reports to the Streets section Public Works Supervisor within the Streets & Wastewater Division.

ALTERNATIVE WORK SCHEDULE:
This position typically works a 4/10 workweek from 6:00am to 4:30pm, Monday through Thursday. All crew members have the responsibility to work Standby Duties, which consist of a 2 person, 1 week rotation, where they must be available to respond to after hours and weekend emergency call outs.
City offices are closed on Fridays. City facilities will also close for a period of approximately two weeks in December with time off for non-essential personnel.

Position Duties

Paints traffic pavement markings, including stop bars, school crossings, yield, and crosswalks, while operating a vehicle with airless unit, airless spray gun, and stencils; paints City curbs to regulate parking, utilizing a vehicle with airless unit and an airless spray gun; paints traffic directional stripes, operating a self-propelled line striper with airless compressor and regulators; properly cleans the equipment, flushing out all hoses and spray guns and cleaning and oiling the automatic spray guns; installs and repairs signs, replacing defective, destroyed, or damaged traffic signs and placing new traffic signs to regulate, safeguard, and expedite traffic; utilizes post hole digger, shovels, digging bars, brooms, ladders, and other hand and power tools; fabricates signs for traffic control and direction; correctly lays out letters on the sign blank; lays out regulation traffic lines on new City streets, checking and reading blueprints; utilizes ropes and paints traffic dots to guide the street striping operation, measuring all traffic lane lines according to blueprint specifications; installs traffic directional pavement buttons, utilizing epoxy and placing the pavement buttons in accordance with the approved specifications; paints traffic lines in City parking lots and tennis and basketball courts, utilizing a manual push traffic line striper; thins and mixes paints to proper consistency to enable their effective application; lays out job sites, placing safety signs and devices sufficient to protect all members of the crew; performs light and routine maintenance of equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of experience with a traffic painting crew.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS IN: The methods and techniques used in applying paint safely to a variety of street surfaces; techniques used in traffic control; methods for thinning and mixing paint; techniques, materials, and supplies used in traffic painting operations; safety precautions; functions, characteristics, and use and care of common hand tools; operation of power-driven maintenance equipment such as light trucks.

ABILITY TO: Perform heavy and physically demanding work for lengthy and continuous periods of time; work carefully and efficiently under hazardous traffic conditions; thin paints to a proper consistency; operate a variety of traffic painting equipment; apply paint by spray machines; establish and maintain effective working relations with fellow employees and the driving public; keep simple records; understand and follow oral and written instructions.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid California Class B driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
