At Tocaro Blue, we are leading the transformation in the marine industry through the development of next generation technologies to make boating safer, more enjoyable, and fully autonomous. We are based in Pensacola, FL with office in Birmingham, AL. We are looking for a passionate, detail-oriented team player with strong decision-making, problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills.
The Role
Tocaro Blue is developing the next generation marine perception stack by combining optical, radar, AIS, sonar, and cartography data. Our software and machine learning models operate on the edge and depend on high quality cartography to deliver high performance results. We’re looking for a top-notch GIS Engineer to architect and build cartography solutions for our platform. As part of this role, you will have the chance to modernize and advance our existing GIS datasets and automate workflows to maintain that critical data over time. We are looking for someone who can:
· Architect and develop GIS processes and systems to support cartography products
· Generate and maintain Electronic Navigation Charts (ENCs)
· Validate and update chart feature attribution using tools such as ArcGIS Pro or QGIS
· Produce web-optimized map products for fast rendering
· Develop custom geoprocessing workflows with scripting languages such as Python and R
· Structure and maintain data in enterprise geodatabases
· Automate workflows and processes for maintenance and QA/QC of datasets
· Author technical documentation and internal process user guides
Required Skills and Experience
· Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (ex: GIS, Engineering, Mathematics, or Computer Science)
· 6+ years of experience in GIS analysis, charting, and/or bathymetry
· Proficiency with
o Programming Languages: Python (ArcPy, GDAL), R, SQL
o GIS Software: ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, ERDAS Imagine or similar
o Bathymetry Tools: CARIS HIPS & SIPS, MB-System, PDAL
o Cartography and Visualization: Mapbox Studio, TileMill
· Experience managing spatial relational databases (PostGIS, Esri GDB)
· Familiarity with ETL and spatial database pipelines (FME, Python Scripts)
· Ability to obtain a US Government security clearance.
Desired Skills and Experience
· Knowledge of DevOps practices and version control (Git, Jenkins, pipelines)
· Web mapping development: JavaScript (OpenLayers, Mapbox GL JS)
· Previous experience with autonomous devices, machine learning, or marine technology
· Sailing/boating experience a plus
